Muslim Women [ https://sunnyvale.libcal.com/event/14788402 ]
ONLINE: Muslim Women and Global Feminism*
*Tuesday, August 19, 7 to 8 p.m.*
Western feminists, pundits and policymakers tend to portray the Muslim world as the last and most difficult frontier of global feminism. In this online talk, Elora Shehabuddin presents the unique and engaging history of Muslim women who, like other women around the world, have engaged in their own struggles for generations, in ways that include but also extend beyond their religious identity and religious practices. Shehabuddin will discuss the roles of colonialism, religion and Western feminism in relation to feminism for Muslim women.
Elora Shehabuddin is Professor of Global Studies and Gender & Women's Studies at UC Berkeley. Her book "Sisters in the Mirror: A History of Muslim Women and the Global Politics of Feminism" [ https://linkencore.iii.com/iii/encore/record/C__Rb48802654__SSisters%20in%20the%20Mirror__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&suite=def ] was selected as a 2022 Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association and awarded the 2023 Coomaraswamy Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies.

Chinese Exclusion [ https://sunnyvale.libcal.com/event/14779358 ]
ONLINE: The Chinese Exclusion Act*
*Thursday, August 21, 7 to 8:30 p.m.*
In 1882, the U.S. government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, banning the immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States. The law also denied Chinese people the right to become U.S. citizens. In this online talk, Hidetaka Hirota will discuss the background and impacts of the Chinese Exclusion Act. What led lawmakers to enact the law? How was it implemented? How did Chinese immigrants respond to the law? How did it affect subsequent federal immigration policy and shape discussions of immigration and naturalization today?
Hidetaka Hirota is an Associate Professor of History at UC Berkeley specializing in U.S. immigration. His book, "Expelling the Poor: Atlantic Seaboard States and the Nineteenth-Century Origins of American Immigration Policy" [ https://linkencore.iii.com/iii/encore/record/C__Rb41255521__Sexpelling%20the%20poor%20hirota__Orightresult__U__X2?lang=eng&suite=def ], explores the origins of immigration restriction in the United States.

Baywise Dog [ https://baywise.org/ ]
A Clean Pet Means a Clean Bay!
We all love our pets and caring for them the right way also means protecting the environment. Pet waste and flea medicine can harm both stormwater and wastewater systems. Dog waste contains harmful bacteria that can wash into storm drains and pollute creeks and the Bay. Never put pet waste in your backyard compost, FoodCycle bin or yard trimmings cart. Many people think pet waste can be composted, but it can’t! The germs in pet waste can stay in soil for years and are dangerous to wildlife. Carry extra plastic bags on walks and always pick up after your dog.
If you need free doggy bags, look for the Environmental Services team at your next community event.
Visit Baywise.org [ https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fbaywise.org%2F/1/01010198663a7e60-6f4f76cb-47d9-44fb-b7bc-7682043145c4-000000/cj5EaYJ2ENz4LUhVJ_8wyjkWT51rdM3rEN0abWbpQGw=416 ] for more information for you and your vet. You can also find resources on how to safely dispose of expired pet medications.
