Adult Monthly Newsletter, Nov. 7

Good evening. In November, many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. This week, many are also feeling strong emotions about the results of our local, state and federal elections. According to Dr. Robert Emmons, author of "Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier" [ https://sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S173C1259595 ], it can be beneficial in tumultuous times to cultivate gratitude: for those people in your life who celebrate and mourn with you, for the support of loved ones, and for community, whatever that looks like for you.

We are proud to be a place where our community gathers for lifelong learning and play. This month's newsletter invites you to become an adult literacy tutor and to participate in our annual Gingerbread Village. For Native American Heritage Month, we recommend a movie by an Ojibwe filmmaker and a recipe by a Navajo chef. Also this month: Learn practical gardening tips, attend a lecture on Genghis Khan and his descendants, and craft zero-waste gifts for the holidays.

Seeking Literacy Tutors

Tutor and learner sharing a high five [ https://www.library.sunnyvale.ca.gov/services/other-services/adult-literacy ]
Help other adults learn to read and write

In September, we introduced our new adult literacy program Level Up Literacy [ https://www.library.sunnyvale.ca.gov/services/other-services/adult-literacy ]. We're excited about all the learners and tutors that have come onboard so far. However, we currently have more learners than tutors!

Being a literacy tutor is a great way to build your skills while making a positive impact in your community. You and your paired learner will decide on a schedule that works for you both, whether in person or online. No teaching experience required; we will provide training, staff support and a community of other tutors.

Do you value and enjoy helping others? Then join us if you:

* Are age 18 and up
* Have a high school diploma or GED
* Are able to read, write and speak English proficiently
* Possess excellent interpersonal skills, including listening and communication skills
* Can commit to meeting with an adult learner two hours per week for six months

For more questions or to register as either an adult learner or to become a volunteer tutor, call our Level Up Literacy line at 408-730-7390 or email Level Up Literacy <literacyap@sunnyvale.ca.gov>.

Sunnyvale Gingerbread Village

Submissions accepted Saturday, Dec. 7

The Sunnyvale Gingerbread Village is coming back for our fourth year! The village will be on display in the Library's lobby from Sunday, Dec. 8th until early January 2025.

*How to participate:*

* Sign up by contacting Sunnyvale Arts Commissioner Winnie Lam <winnielam@gmail.com?subject=Sunnyvale%20Gingerbread%20Village%202024>.
* Make and decorate your own family-friendly gingerbread house.
* Bring your gingerbread creation to the Library Program Room on Saturday, Dec. 7 between noon and 5:30 p.m. If this time does not work for you, please email Winnie to arrange an alternative drop-off.
* The maximum size of each gingerbread submission is 12 inches long x 12 inches wide x 17 inches tall.
* Maximum of one gingerbread creation per household.
* Your gingerbread creation will not be returned.

*Building suggestions:*

* Use a kit! Gingerbread house kits are available at local stores or online. They come in a variety of designs from café to cottage to castle.
* Use a hot glue gun. It will keep your house together better than icing during the month-long display period.
* This year's themes are Whoville, Grinch and tropical holidays. These themes are merely suggestions. Use your creativity to make whatever you like!
