*Mountain View’s Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center Combines Green Building Design with Fun and Fitness for All Ages*

"Grand opening and dedication of City’s new aquatics center highlights eco-friendly and cutting-edge technology for powering facility and serving community"

*"Mountain View, Calif."*" — "The City of Mountain View held the highly anticipated grand opening and dedication of the Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center on Saturday, March 29. Located at 2073 Crisanto Ave. in Rengstorff Park, the state-of-the-art aquatics center utilizes the latest in green building design to create a premier destination for aquatic fun and fitness. The $29 million Aquatics Center was funded by the City’s Park Land Dedication Fund.

“The Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center is for everyone, offering year-round and seasonal aquatics programs and spaces for community gatherings and wellness activities,” said Mayor Ellen Kamei. “With two pools, the Aquatics Center provides a broader range of aquatic programs than ever before. Plus, the eco-friendly building design underscores our city’s commitment to sustainability by harnessing renewable energy for heating the building and pools.”

Earlier this month, the 8,200 square foot Aquatics Center began welcoming guests for aquatics programs including lap swim and drop-in water exercise.

The planned summer 2024 opening of the Aquatics Center was delayed to March 2025 due to construction challenges, which involved mechanical commissioning and implementation of an all-electric hot water systems. The facility is the first electrified municipal aquatics center in California to include more than 10,000 sq. ft. of pool area.

“We greatly appreciate the community’s patience with the winter opening of this premiere aquatics center,” said City Manager Kimbra McCarthy. “Mountain View now has a top-notch facility that embraces sustainable practices while providing a great aquatics experience for the young and young-at-heart for decades to come.”

Highlights of the eco-friendly Aquatics Center include:

* 25-yard by 25-meter lap pool featuring 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards
* Recreation pool with zero-depth beach entry, water slide, interactive water toys and shallow lap lanes
* Modern amenities and expanded facility space of 8,200 sq. ft.
* Year-round aquatics programs such as lap swim, water exercise and American Red Cross courses
* Seasonal programs at the aquatics center include recreation swim and swim lessons
* Community event space that is available to rent for birthday parties, meetings or other events
* Commitment to sustainability with all-electric systems powered by photovoltaic and solar thermal energy
* Building’s exterior features an invigorating “Swim” graphic signage
* Four unique public art installations integrated throughout the facility

The Aquatics Center is designed to achieve the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold rating [ https://www.usgbc.org/leed ] for sustainable building design and construction.

“Our community is getting a tremendous upgrade with the new Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center,” said Community Services Director John Marchant. “The facility replaces the previous Rengstorff Park Pool, which opened in 1959 and was due for an overhaul to meet the community’s aquatics facility and program needs. The new aquatics center is 3,000 sq. ft. larger than the original one and will host year-round aquatics programs as well as seasonal programs such as recreation swim and swim lessons.”

The Aquatics Center also features three new and one restored public art pieces. The art installations are:

* “Flying Waves” by Masako Miki: Two wave benches, constructed from recycled redwood timbers, are located in front of the facility.
* “Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction” by Liz Hickok: Installation of lenticular prints, featuring images of water from the original Rengstorff Park Pool, are located in the interior hallway.
* “Aquadream” by WOWHAUS: Three water drop sculptures that may also be used for seating are located in the exterior pool deck.
* “Mosaic Fish Sculptures” by artist unknown in 1959: Three mosaic fish sculptures from the original Rengstorff Park Pool were refurbished and now located in the interior lobby.

Construction of the Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center began in April 2022 and opened to the public on March 3, 2025. The City’s second pool, Eagle Park Pool, remains in operation, serving swim teams and pool rentals and seasonal swim programs.
