The Holidays in 1924
Erichsen's Grocery photo circa 1925
As 2024 draws to a close, it is fun to look back 100 years to see what was happening in Mountain View in December 1924.
In the mid-1920s, Mountain View was home to around 2,000 residents, and the city's boundaries had grown to incorporate new territory east of Bush Street. Despite its small size, Mountain View had a thriving business community that advertised heavily in the Mountain View Register-Leader newspaper.
Many of those businesses tried to entice Christmas shoppers in the paper for December 19, 1924. According to a State Highway Garage ad, "you can express the Christmas thought to your family in no finer way" than purchasing a Nash Special Six Sedan. Erichsen's Grocery on Castro Street advertised an alphabetized list of holiday delicacies available at their store. Miller Hardware advertised several "gifts of permanence" ranging from harmonicas, which started at $0.25, to Gilfillan Neutrodyne GN-1 radios, which cost $271.50 or nearly $5,000 in 2024 dollars.
Want to learn more about Mountain View history? Join us for our next local history program Exploring El Camino Real: The Story of California's First Highway [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/13241977 ]
on Thursday, Dec. 12 to learn about the roadway's route, landmarks, and role in our community's story of colonization, conversion, coercion, connections and commerce. You can also freely browse our online collections of historic newspapers [ https://library.mountainview.gov/learn/mountain-view-history/mountain-view-historical-newspapers-online ] and photographs and oral histories [ https://californiarevealed.org/partner/mountain-view-public-library ].
