Your Weekly South City Update | Your Weekly South City Update | City Council Recap, New Wellness Center, and more | August 30, 2024

Mayor's Update     Hello neighbor! September is literally around the corner, and along with it are a lot of events. My personal favorite: our annual Concert in the Park on Saturday, September 21 (11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Join us for a free concert with The Dazz Band and Blessid Union of Souls as well as a community funfest at Orange Memorial Park – Picnic Meadow.   City Council Recap Happy Labor Day to all the working families of South San Francisco! A friendly reminder that all City offices, with the exception of our Police and Fire Department, will be closed on Monday, September 2.   City Council Recap At this week’s meeting, we proclaimed August as National Water Quality Month most especially in recognition of the community benefits derived from the City’s team of dedicated professionals in engineering, field operations, parks, and at the Water Quality Control Plant. We also proclaimed September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month as we remember our beloved community member, Juliana Peña, who lost her battle to Neuroblastoma, and other children and their families who have been impacted by childhood cancer. The iconic tree on Sign Hill and City Hall will be lit gold to continue awareness for the entirety of September. September is also National Preparedness Month. This year’s theme focuses on Preparing Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities for Risks and Disaster as surveys show that more than 60% of that population are not confident in their ability to prepare. Assistant City Manager Rich Lee also provided our community with an update on City Council 2024 Priorities. Good news, we’re right on track! To improve accessibility, we now livestream our city council meetings on our YouTube channel. Catch the next meeting live or watch the replay. Watch the Replay   Installed in 1969, the 90-foot telephone pole with strands of 784 bulbs in the shape of a Christmas tree had traditionally been lit in red and green in December honoring Christmas. The City began lighting the tree in gold in 2013, after the passing of one of our residents, Juliana Peña. The tradition has continued ever since in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.     Coming soon: North County Wellness Center Yesterday I had the opportunity to join the County for the groundbreaking of the upcoming North County Wellness Center. We look forward to the synergy of collaboration between the City of South San Francisco and San Mateo County as it joins our Civic Center Campus directly across from the Library | Parks & Recreation Center and Police Operations Center.
