SSF Police Expands Public Safety with New Surveillance Technology

Email from City of South San Francisco South San Francisco adds 12 additional automated license plate readers and a new drone program PRESS RELEASE Friday, January 17, 2025 South San Francisco Police Expands Public Safety with New Surveillance Technology   SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., January 17, 2025 – South San Francisco is strengthening its commitment to public safety with 12 additional automated license plate readers and a new drone program. These enhancements are part of a larger initiative to support the South San Francisco Police Department (SSFPD) in deterring crime and keeping the community safe. The SSFPD first launched the automated license plate reader program (ALPR) in 2022 with 28 ALPR cameras installed at key locations throughout the city, enabling officers to quickly identify stolen vehicles or vehicles associated with criminal activity. “The cameras have proved to be a vital gamechanger for public safety. The City has a seen a significant decrease in property crime, and have recorded 555 flock-related incidents that led to 147 arrests and numerous cases being forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for warrants and prosecution,” said Chief Scott Campbell of the South San Francisco Police Department. Due to the program’s ongoing success and benefit to public safety, the South San Francisco City Council authorized expanding the program by installing an additional 12 cameras to increase coverage throughout the city. This addition will bring the ALPR program to 40 cameras. In addition to the ALPR program, both the South San Francisco Police and South San Francisco Fire Departments have kicked off a new drone surveillance program. The South San Francisco Police Department will strategically deploy drones to provide law enforcement with real-time monitoring and crucial evidence for investigations. These units are equipped with 360-degree cameras and advanced analytics, allowing officers to respond swiftly to incidents and prevent criminal activity. Other benefits include reduced search times, minimized impact to the public, and improved crime scene documentation and collision investigations. The South San Francisco Fire Department will be using similar aircraft with one unit specifically assigned to the Battalion Chief. The program will help provide enhanced situational awareness on vegetation and structure fire incidents, provide thermal imaging capability in low visibility/smoke conditions, allow for improved identification of fire location within a structure, aid in structure stability assessments during fire incidents, and reduce exposure of personnel to smoke and hazardous materials. The drones will also improve the efficiency of locating victims during Search and Rescue incidents and provide rapid searches over large areas. “Our focus is on protecting the people who live, work, and visit South San Francisco,” said South San Francisco Fire Chief Matt Samson. “Access to this new technology provides our public safety personnel with critical tools to enhance their response and keep our community safe.” Both departments emphasized the importance of transparency and public trust, noting they are committed to ensuring the appropriate use of surveillance technology in compliance with privacy laws and community expectations.
