Find Treasures in Secondhand Markets
ssn
Sometimes it seems like everyone wants the most up-to-date gadgets, clothing and collectable items. Fashion trends come and go, and new models of electronics are constantly announced. What if we could shift our perspective from "shiny and new" to "durable and one-of-a-kind"? Here are some ways you can turn others' "trash" into your treasures!
* Buying secondhand in thrift or consignment stores has been popular for decades. Now there's websites dedicated specifically to thrift shopping, so it's never been easier. You can find anything from vintage clothes to classic furniture and refurbished electronics.
* Sharing groups are all about gifting among neighbors with no money exchanged. These groups are especially popular online; try searching "Buy Nothing" on social media sites. You can put out an ask for a specific item, or simply browse what your neighbors have listed.
* If you invest in a high-quality product, repair helps stretch your investment farther. From shoe cobblers to furniture upholsterers, there are options to fix almost anything. You can also check out a Fixit Clinic or Repair Café near you. These are free events where knowledgeable volunteers examine and help fix your broken appliances.

Did you know gas stoves create harmful pollutants? Some ways to reduce pollutants from your gas stove are using the exhaust hood, opening windows and installing carbon monoxide detectors. An induction stove is a pollutant-free alternative. Save now and get cooking with SVCE's [ https://svcleanenergy.org/home-rebates/ ] rebate of up to $500 to switch to an induction stove.

*Tips for Saving Water Indoors *
watersense
California experienced heavy rain last winter, but the next drought could be around the corner. We encourage you to continue making water conservation a way of life. As we enter the rainy season, your lawn requires less water. This is a great time to shift focus to saving water indoors.
One way to save water indoors is to install water-efficient faucet aerators and showerheads in your kitchen and bathrooms. The City partners with Valley Water [ https://www.valleywater.org/saving-water/indoor-conservation/water-saving-devices/online-shopping-cart-free-resources ] to offer free faucet aerators, showerheads, and other water-saving devices. Call 408-730-7900 to learn more.
Other quick tips for saving water indoors:
* Take shorter showers to save 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
* Rinse fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water instead of running water.
* Only wash full loads of laundry and dishes to maximize water use efficiency.

How Can You Protect Your Watershed?
ssn [ https://mywatershedwatch.org/ ]
A watershed is an area of land where all runoff drains to a common body of water. All stormwater runoff in Sunnyvale flows to the San Francisco Bay. All of Sunnyvale is in a single watershed called the West Valley Watershed. In fact, eight other South Bay cities are also part of the West Valley Watershed, which spans 85 square miles. Within Sunnyvale, there are over 7,000 storm drains that collect stormwater runoff. Stormwater is not filtered and cleaned like wastewater is before it enters the Bay, so we must be careful with what goes into our storm drains. By making simple changes in our everyday lives we can prevent pollution.
Here are just a few ways you can protect your watershed:
* Pick up after your pets. Pet waste contains bacteria which is harmful to our waterways.
* Take your car to a car wash. Soapy water from washing your car at home can enter a storm drain.
* Regularly maintain your car to avoid leaking motor oil.
* Purchase less toxic pesticides and fertilizers, such as those with “Our Water, Our World” or “Safer Choice” labels. Also, limit overwatering your gardens, excess water runoff containing chemicals can pollute stormwater.
* Educate others around you! Many people do not know about stormwater or how to protect it.
Our watershed is our home and we need to keep it clean and safe. To learn more, visit these sites:
* Mywatershedwatch.org [ https://mywatershedwatch.org/ ] for more tips and information.
* Cleanacreek.org [ https://cleanacreek.org/ ] to join a litter clean-up event.
