Email from City Manager's Office Palo Alto community news, announcements, and events View as Webpage   What's New New Mayor & Vice Mayor Elected, Outgoing Councilmember Recognitions Law Enforcement Appreciation Day: January 9 Lunar New Year Celebrations ICYMI – Community Connections Series: Senior Services & Support Palo Alto Homeless Point In Time Count – Volunteers Needed Citywide Updates New Mayor & Vice Mayor Elected, Outgoing Councilmember Recognitions At their meeting on Monday, January 6, the City Council and community thanked outgoing Mayor and Councilmember Lydia Kou and outgoing Councilmember Greg Tanaka for their service to the community. The Council also shared their appreciation to Mayor Greer Stone for his leadership as mayor in 2024. This was the first meeting for new Councilmembers George Lu and Keith Reckdahl, and the Council elected Ed Lauing as mayor and Vicki Veenker as vice mayor. The Council will kick off the new year at their first regular business meeting on Monday, January 13 and plans to hold an annual retreat on Saturday, January 25 starting at 9 a.m. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day: January 9 Today, on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated members of the Palo Alto Police Department. Your hard work, courage, and commitment to keeping our community safe do not go unnoticed. Thank you for your service. Lunar New Year Celebrations Celebrate the Year of the Snake at Palo Alto Lunar New Year events. The Palo Alto City Library is hosting an event for youth, 3 – 11 years old this Saturday, January 11, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Enjoy martial arts performers, dance troops, and singing performances. On Sunday, January 26, 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. join the Palo Alto Chinese Community for festivities. Both events take place in the El Palo Alto Room at Mitchell Park Community Center. ICYMI – Community Connections Series: Senior Services & Support A new series celebrates our partners who are helping us build community and foster connectedness through the work they do on behalf of the City advancing the City Council’s 2024 priority Community Health, Safety, Wellness & Belonging. Our first community connection series article focused on the Magical Bridge Foundation, and in our second edition we share services and programs for seniors. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that 84% of Americans do not feel attached to their local community, fueling an epidemic of loneliness and isolation across all age groups. The isolation created by the COVID-19 pandemic further amplified the need for human connection and creating a community that works for all. Read on to dive deeper into services available to our senior community. Palo Alto Homeless Point In Time Count – Volunteers Needed A Point in Time (PIT) Count is scheduled for January 23 for gathering data on unhoused individuals, key to federal and state funding for homelessness programs. This annual effort is conducted nationwide by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Gain details and sign-up to volunteer by January 21. Be Well Emergency Alerts & Being Prepared: Our hearts go out to all affected by the fires in Los Angeles County. Even outside of typical fire season, there is wildfire risk. One simple step you can take now to be prepared for any emergency is signing up for emergency alerts. Other ways to stay informed include connecting with the City on Facebook, X, Instagram and Nextdoor and following the Palo Alto Police Department on Nixle. Alcohol & Cancer Risk: A new U.S. Surgeon General Advisory was recently issued describing the scientific evidence between alcohol consumption and increased risk for at least seven different types of cancer. A short briefing details risks and key recommendations by United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy. Review all advisories. Public Health Reminders: Santa Clara County Public Health is requiring masks for patients, visitors, and staff in patient care areas of health care delivery facilities in Santa Clara County (this includes dentist visits) from November 1 through March 31 of each year. Foodie Friday at the Drop: Teens, spice up your Friday at Foodie Fridays at The Drop at Mitchell Park Teen Center, located at 3700 Middlefield Road! Every second Friday of the month from 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m., the Teen Center is serving up tasty fun with recipes and eats teens love. This Friday (January 10), it’s all about the Salsa Bar! Check out details about this event and more.  Recipe of the Week: Speaking of salsa, try this versatile salsa recipe using any tomatoes you have on hand, including cherry tomatoes, minimizing food waste and creating a unique sweet flavor for your meal. Family Resources Let Us Know How We Can Help You: Visit City Hall during regular business hours from Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and every other Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our new Lobby Help Desk and existing Virtual Help Desk are two ways of many to gain in-person assistance. Plus, pay a parking citation or permits, start, stop or pause utility services, report a crime or pay a utility bill at our customer service counters. Find more ways to gain the support you need. Discover Gap Years: Learn why students choose to take a gap year between high school and college and how to plan for a transformational and purposeful one during an information session for high school students and their parents on Tuesday, January 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Mitchell Park Library. 3rdThursday on California Avenue: Enjoy live music, eat, and connect with community at the year-round monthly outdoor festival on Thursday, January 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. celebrating this month’s theme, “2025 Wellness Reset.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service: Join community and give back to the community. Youth Community Service is cohosting a Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 1 – 3 p.m. Join this youth-driven service opportunities, live music, inspirational presentations, food trucks, and local organizations.
