Sounds like the holidays are here! This holiday season, lift up our community by choosing to eat and shop local. From Cal Ave. and Midtown to Downtown, there’s something for everyone. The City is connecting our community to local holiday discounts and promotions again this season. The City’s UpliftLocal.org website will be filled with holiday cheer starting next week, so make sure to ask your favorite Palo Alto business to submit their holiday drink specials and discounts. Don't miss our Uplift Local Holiday Edition next week, so make sure to check back for events and resources sure to help you have a magical season. Save Big for a Limited Time: Consider a Heat Pump HVAC System Commit to a greener community, reduce your carbon footprint, and help reach our community goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2030. Consider installing a heat pump heating and cooling system with new limited time income-qualified savings of up to $8,000. Learn about who qualifies for the State rebate, steps to apply, and other tools to save time and money. Installing a heat pump HVAC system is one way residents can save the planet one home at a time. Wet and Windy Weather Continues The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated forecast with a Wind Advisory in effect noting possible wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph from tonight into Friday evening and gusts above 65 mph in higher elevations. Rain is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week, with little to no chance of flood risk in Palo Alto. Find more information, tips and resources to report concerns and stay safe. The City is hosting an Open House for the community to learn more about Overnight Warming Locations (OWL), where members of our unhoused community may stay overnight for a warm, dry, and safe space. Learn more about the OWL on Wednesday, December 4, 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Downtown Library. Palo Alto Link Rideshare Service Fare Changes The City Council approved continuing the Palo Alto Link service through June 2025 and a fare increase to support the rideshare service after anticipated grant funding from the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) runs out. Beginning December 4, 2024, fares for disabled, low income, and senior riders will increase by $1 to $2, and all other fares will increase from $3.50 to $4. Free rides for teens continue to and from locations that support youth mental health such as libraries and community centers. Downtown Housing Area Plan Survey Open Now An online survey is now open to gain perspectives on housing downtown. Input will help inform the Downtown Housing Area Plan process focused on housing production in Palo Alto’s downtown and implementing policies and programs of the City’s Comprehensive Plan and the 2023–2031 Housing Element. The survey is one outreach tool of many used to engage the community, businesses, and regional and local stakeholders. Take the survey here. Family Resources Celebrate and Reflect on Thanksgiving: Join two special Thanksgiving storytimes happening on Saturday, November 23 at 11 a.m. at Mitchell Park Library and on Wednesday, November 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Children’s Library. Learn Native American perspectives on Thanksgiving. Read for gratitude this holiday season with a book from the Library.  Brazilian Screenings: Watch Drops of Joy, a family-friendly documentary that highlights the significance of play in childhood and showcases elements of Brazilian culture with a regional soundtrack on Saturday, November 23 at 3 p.m. at Rinconada Library. AI Helpdesk: Gain confidence in AI tools through weekly interactive sessions on the Library’s Reboot Room YouTube channel starting Monday, November 25 at 4 p.m. Ideal for those new to generative AI with topics including creativity, data analysis, language translation, writing code, and search skills. Portraits with Pencils - Artist Demonstration: Enjoy an afternoon observing a master portrait artist at work with award-winning Cubberley Artist Studio Program artist-in-residence Eric Fei Guan on Wednesday, November 27 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Park Library. Studio Art Sale: The Palo Alto Art Center Studio Holiday Sale is Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The sale showcases artwork created by local artists working in the studios at the Art Center. Proceeds benefit the participating artists, our studios, and the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation.
