Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan Update
The City is developing a Citywide Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan (Plan) [ https://collaborate.mountainview.gov/biodiversity ]. Following the community engagement process detailed below, public feedback was synthesized with science-based research and data to shape the Plan’s vision, goals, and objectives. The project team is now identifying and reviewing feasible actions and metrics for the Plan, which will be brought as a draft to Commissions and the City Council for review and adoption August 2025 through April 2026.
The Plan will inform and influence other city plans, projects, and ordinances related to vegetation, wildlife, trees, and species, aiming to increase local habitats, preserve and enhance tree canopy, mitigate the effects of climate change, and create a more resilient environment. The City has been working with San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) to develop the Plan and a City Project Team, comprised of staff from multiple departments, was also established to support the development, facilitation, review, and implementation of the Plan.
Community engagement for the project began in June 2024 and wrapped up in December 2024. Efforts included pop-up events, workshops, a survey, an interactive project webpage, and a public stakeholder workshop specifically geared towards stakeholders, volunteers, and community members with technical knowledge, interest, or a connection to biodiversity and the urban forest. This workshop provided an opportunity for subject matter specialists and thought partners to participate in meaningful discussions and activities on topics including ‘Designing and Planting around the Built Environment,’ ‘Incorporating Habitat for Biodiversity into Transportation and Transit,’ and ‘Protecting Spaces for Nature.’
