Mayor Newsom loves his electric vehicle and encourages others to go electric if possible. After working with Ford’s shuttle company, Chariot, he became an early adopter—one of the first in California to drive a Mustang Mach-E! Driving a vehicle powered by clean electricity is a huge way to cut down on your carbon footprint, and driving an EV is quiet and fast! EV range continues to increase with most new cars reaching 200-300 miles on a single charge. If you don’t have access to charging at home, check out the many publicly available chargers around San Mateo. Peninsula Clean Energy is available to answer questions you may have about buying an EV or EV charging.  Let’s keep the Earth Month momentum going—every sustainable choice makes a difference! Sustainability Programs and Resources Electrify San Mateo: Three Upcoming Community Meetings Switching from natural gas to carbon-free electric equipment in our homes and buildings is critical to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our community. Gas appliances release air pollutants and studies have shown that exposure to these pollutants pose significant health risks. In addition to advancing our climate goals, electrification eliminates these risks and can provide a safer and healthier environment. The Electrify San Mateo project team will be presenting existing building electrification policy pathways at three upcoming City Commission meetings: May 12: Senior Advisory Commission May 14: Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission May 21: Community Relations Commission We invite you to share your feedback and shape the Electrify San Mateo: Sustainable Building Strategy. The event is free and open to the public and will feature: 🌱 Free compost—residents may load all they like—bring your own container or bucket! Learn More Public Works Leads a Successful Earth Day Cleanup at Ryder Park On Saturday, April 26 our Public Works Department hosted an Earth Day cleanup event at Ryder Park, working with 650 volunteers to eliminate litter and protect our waterways. To help celebrate Earth Day, our Parks and Recreation Department also planted a tree at Ryder Park and provided crafts and games through Mobile Recreation. After the volunteers collected nearly 20 yards of trash and about 1.5 yards of recyclables, our Public Works team grilled burgers and hot dogs to thank everyone who participated in the cleanup.
