Palo Alto Fire is excited to celebrate Fire Prevention Week with a special open house for the community on October 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find resources, tips, and ways to be safe to prevent fires in this new community update. Newell Road Bridge Replacement Project Status Update Due to delays in Caltrans review of right-of-way certification documents, access to federal funding did not occur, and Caltrans has now reprogrammed construction funding to FY 2026. Since this potentially impacts the City’s ability to start work in Summer 2025, staff is continuing to seek earlier funding from Caltrans to follow the right-of-way certification approval. Other project work continues notably tree removal at Newell Road and San Francisquito Creek needed in advance of construction began this week. Work will continue tentatively through Tuesday, October 15. Read the full update. Creating a Safer Community: Understanding and Defining Hate Crimes - October 15 Join an information session sharing the difference between hate crimes and hate incidents, how to report hate crimes, and victim resources on Tuesday, October 15. Hosted by the Human Relations Commission, hear from key presenters including Palo Alto's Mayor, and leadership from the Palo Alto Police Department, Santa Clara County District Attorney, and FBI. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., program begins at 6 p.m. Register here. Walk-ins are welcome. Sibling Cities Town Hall on Housing this Sunday Palo Alto and its Sibling City Bloomington, Indiana have focused attention on housing affordability and access through their updated housing plans. Sibling Cities USA invites you to a town hall to discuss how both communities are tackling affordability, access, and homelessness on Sunday, October 13 at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Park Community Center. Proceeds benefit the library’s programs and collections. The sale is Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 at the Cubberley Community Center. Start by finding ways you can go electric at home like the City's program to help you switch to a heat pump water heater.  Indigenous Peoples Day: Learn ways to celebrate the holiday, from acknowledging the Indigenous lands you are on to planting native plants. Take in a virtual exhibition from the National Museum of the American Indian. As a reminder, all City facilities and offices will be closed on Monday, October 14 to observe the holiday. Public safety services will continue to operate 24/7.
