Learn More Community Development Updates Public Hearing: General Plan 2040 Land Use Map Amendments The Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers (330 W. 20th Ave.) to discuss the Strive San Mateo General Plan 2040 Land Use Map Amendments. Those who'd like to participate remotely can learn more at www.cityofsanmateo.org/publicmeetings. Strive San Mateo General Plan 20240 Land Use Map Amendments During the General Plan adoption hearings and its subsequent implementation, the City Council, staff, and individual landowners identified 13 sites across the city where the General Plan 2040 land use designations were either inconsistent with the existing and/or surrounding land uses, or required revision to reflect City Council direction. To address these inconsistencies and fully align with the General Plan's vision, the City is proposing land use designation amendments at these specified locations. Please visit www.cityofsanmateo.org/whatshappening for exact locations. A General Plan Interim Implementation Procedures Memo will also be published and made available at the meeting. This memo will provide information on how the land use designations will be applied until the City's Zoning Code (Title 27) has updated to be fully consistent with General Plan 2040. Second Community Workshop on Tenant Protections and Anti-Displacement On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025 the City will be holding a second community workshop on tenant protections and anti-displacement policies. This workshop will be hosted by the Community Relations Commission (CRC) at their regular meeting at 7pm in City Council Chambers (and virtually on Zoom). This session will take place in the same format as our previous CRC meeting held on November 20, 2024. If you missed the previous CRC meeting on November 20th, you may access a recording of the meeting HERE. This is another opportunity for anyone to participate and provide their feedback on the most pressing housing issues in San Mateo. Staff will also provide a brief overview of the preliminary feedback received from the first community workshop and from preliminary meetings with staff of local legal aid organizations and tenant and landlord advocacy organizations. Spanish interpretation services will be available at this meeting (in-person and online). Please RSVP to housing@cityofsanmateo.org to receive a reminder and a Zoom link, for those participating remotely. An agenda and instructions on how to join the virtual meeting will also be posted in the City’s Public Meeting Portal the week before the meeting. For questions regarding the workshop details, contact us at jemora@cityofsanmateo.org. Public Meeting Portal Parks and Recreation News Spring 2025 Activity Guide is LIVE! Get the Guide Public Works Progress Keeping our Storm Drains Clean this Winter Field maintenance crews have been working behind the scenes this winter to clean storm drain inlets and trash racks during wet weather. When the vacuum truck arrives at a storm drain, they start by removing debris like leaves, trash, and branches on top of and around the storm drain inlets. After clearing the area, they lift the inlet’s heavy cover to access the basin. The crew then uses the vacuum truck’s hose to remove any debris or muck blocking the drainpipe. For tougher debris, water jets help loosen everything before the vacuum sucks it all up. This process ensures rainwater can flow freely and prevents flooding, while also preventing debris from being sent downstream which could cause other blockages. During a rain event, the crew cleans an average of 50 catch basins and 45 trash racks citywide. Even more work is done as preventative maintenance to the storm system prior to a rain event. It's a tough job, but it keeps the community safe and flood-free. What You Can Do to Help Taking care of storm drains is something we can all contribute to. By participating in the Adopt-A-Drain program, you can help prevent blockages caused by leaves, trash, and debris. Keeping the area around your storm drain clean allows rainwater to flow freely, reducing the risk of flooding and protecting your neighborhood from drainage issues. Join the effort below! Adopt a Drain Here California’s New Daylighting Law (AB 413) Now in Effect As of Jan. 1, 2025, it's the law to keep at least 20 feet (or one large car length) between a marked or unmarked crosswalk and your vehicle! California Assembly Bill 413, also known as the Daylighting Law, prohibits stopping or parking a car within 20 feet of the vehicle approach of any painted or unpainted crosswalk, or 15 feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present. This new state law helps increase visibility for all road users, including bicyclists and pedestrians entering the crosswalk and drivers approaching the crosswalk. New red curb markings will be installed in a phased approach in areas with high pedestrian-activity, commercial uses, schools, and parks, as well as high priority intersections identified in the adopted Local Road Safety Plan to be consistent with the new law. Street parking will be removed for new red curb markings where there is street parking next to the crosswalk. A 45-day grace period started on Jan. 1, 2025, and warnings have started to be issued for AB 413-related violations. This allows time to adjust to this new State law. For more information on AB 413, visit www.cityofsanmateo.org/DaylightingLaw.
