Police Announcements Tips on Protecting your Purchases this Black Friday The San Mateo Police Department would like to share some safety tips to keep in mind when doing your Black Friday shopping: Only carry enough cash and the credit cards you are going to need. If someone bumps into you, immediately check for your wallet or valuables. Make sure purses/backpacks/etc stay closed and zipped. Donโ€™t leave purses/backpacks/etc in shopping carts unattended. If carrying multiple shopping bags, be careful when putting them down. Keep a count and make sure you pay attention to what youโ€™ve purchased, so that you donโ€™t forget them anywhere. Condense into fewer bags if possible. That way youโ€™ll look as if you have less to steal. Stay focused. Avoid being on your phone or getting distracted. Keep receipts with you instead of in shopping bags. If items get stolen, youโ€™ll be able to provide descriptions, values, and actual the actual loss versus trying to recall what you purchased. If you must store items in your vehicle while you return to the store, make sure you put them in the trunk. However, you may want to think about moving your vehicle at that point. Criminals will watch vehicles for opportunities like these and burglarize your vehicle when you walk away. Let's start the holiday shopping season off right. Stay safe and shop smart! Thanksgiving Tips for Safely Disposing of Grease Don't want to call the plumber on Thanksgiving and pay a hefty holiday fee? Read on! When cooking Thanksgiving dinner it's important to be mindful about fats, oils and grease (FOG) in preparation and cleanup. Why? FOG buildup and debris cause the majority of sewer overflows in the Bay Area. To stay in the flow this holiday, keep FOG, hair, wipes, and other things that can cause backups out of your pipes. Learn more on FOGs and how to safely dispose of them to protect your pipes below. To dispose of small amounts of cooking oil, wipe the pan with a paper towel or pour grease in a container and let it cool and solidify, then place it in the trash. Large quantities of cooking oil from frying turkeys or other foods should be stored in a tightly sealed container and taken to a collection event or grease disposal site. Grease disposal sites in San Mateo County include the following (check with the facilities for pricing and policies): Shoreway Environmental Center Public Recycling Center - San Carlos (residential cooking oil up to 15 gallons can be disposed of for free) Blue Line Transfer Station โ€“ South San Francisco (residential cooking oil up to 10 gallons; check website for pricing) Check the infographic and link below for more details and tips. Read More Fire Department Announcements Thanksgiving Fire Prevention Tips from SMC Fire Did you know that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with more than three times the daily average for such incidents? Unattended cooking is by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. Cooking causes half (52%) of all reported home fires and nearly two of every five (36%) home fire injuries, and it is a leading cause of home fire deaths (17%). On Thanksgiving day alone, an estimated 1,610 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments in 2022, reflecting a 399 percent increase over the daily average. So while we would love to see you all on Thanksgiving, we donโ€™t want to see you professionally, so please take the following precautions: Never leave your cooking unattended. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher If you deep fry your turkey, do so outside, at least 10 feet away from the structure (Including the eaves) Keep children and pets away from the stove Make sure your smoke alarms are working For more safety tips, please click the button below. Although there didnโ€™t appear to be structural damage, the City's team observed dark areas that could potentially be mold.โ€ฏTo ensure the building was safe for habitation by the tenant and public, the City brought in an air quality testing specialist. The preliminary results indicated high levels of airborne contaminants, potentially indicative of a wastewater source.โ€ฏThe levels were high enough that City staff determined it necessary to close the facilities to ensure public safety while the City did an extensive investigation. The City has initiated containment and investigatory work at the facility, including sanitizing equipment and identifying areas impacted by the water seepage. These investigations, including videoing subsurface drain lines, will help the team determine the extent of impacts and what restoration efforts need to be done in order for the public to safely return and banquet operations to resume. Depending on the extent of impacts, restoration could take several months. In the meantime, the City has rented bathroom trailers for golf course patrons and users of the driving range and pro shop and is evaluating alternative options for providing food and beverages for customers who would like quick meals and drinks on the go. The City appreciates your patience as we work to get our banquet and restaurant operations back online. We know this is an important amenity and will share more updates as we know more. โ€Š Follow us on social media & stay engaged Share This Email Share This Email Share This Email City of San Mateo | 330 West 20th Avenue | San Mateo, CA 94403 US Unsubscribe | Update Profile | Our Privacy Policy | Constant Contact Data Notice
