Compost Giveaway
Compost Giveaway (https://city.fremont.gov/compostgiveaway) —presented by the Cities of Fremont and Newark, Republic Services (https://www.republicservices.com/municipality/fremont-ca) , and the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station (https://www.fremont-recycling.com/) —returns on Sunday, April 6.
Fremont households can pick up two free bags of compost by presenting their Republic Services bill. This quality compost comes from our residents’ yard trimmings and food scraps and is carefully processed to be a valuable soil amendment for landscaping.
Event Details:
Sunday, April 6
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (or while supplies last)
Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station at 41149 Boyce Rd., Fremont
1. Empty your trunk ahead of time.
2. Leave your pets at home.
3. Drive through and pay attention to signs and instructions. Please stay in your vehicle at all times.
4. Staff will open your trunk before you get to the compost line.
5. Present your garbage bill.
6. Staff will load your compost bags into your trunk while you stay in your vehicle.
Keep Composting!
Don’t forget to regularly compost your yard trimmings, food scraps, and food-soiled paper items, like paper plates, cups, napkins, and paper towels. Placing these materials in your green cart greatly reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Composting is a simple way to make a big difference for the environment!

Lake Elizabeth Water Quality Improvement Pilot Project
Water quality improvements are coming to Lake Elizabeth! On March 4, the Fremont City Council approved the Lake Elizabeth Water Quality Improvement Pilot Project to reduce the likelihood of fish die-off events occurring during extreme heat, like the one that occurred last July. Surface aerators, floating islands, and monitoring probes will be installed to a section of the lake to determine their effectiveness at reducing future fish die-offs. The goal is to improve oxygenation, provide shade, regulate water temperature, and monitor water quality. The elements are anticipated to be installed by July 2025, at a total estimated cost of $175,000. If the pilot project is successful, the City may consider expanding the project to additional sections of the lake. Additional project benefits may include cooler lake temperatures, better oxygen levels, and reduced algae growth.
Lake Elizabeth, located in Fremont’s Central Park, is an 83-acre freshwater lake designed for flood control and stormwater storage. The lake is owned by the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (ACFCD) (https://acfloodcontrol.org/) and licensed to the City for recreational purposes. According to ACFCD, the lake’s current depth is adequate for flood protection purposes, so dredging is not warranted at this time.
Draft Active Transportation Plan
The City is releasing for public review our draft Active Transportation Plan (ATP) document (https://www.my.fremont.gov/active-transportation-plan) , which focuses on improving access, safety, and comfort for active modes of transportation through planning for infrastructure and supportive programs. Active transportation refers to “human-powered” or small battery-assisted modes of travel, including walking, biking, scooting, or using mobility devices. An extensive community engagement process helped to inform the recommended priority programs and project corridors. Community members are encouraged to review the draft ATP and submit their comments through the online comment submittal tool and interactive map. Visit MyFremont (https://www.my.fremont.gov/active-transportation-plan) for more information, to access the draft ATP document, and to submit comments or questions. The last day to submit public comments is March 31, 2025.

Projects must be implemented within Alameda County, and the application deadline is May 9, 2025.

Rebate Program for Electric Heat Pumps
The City is sharing an opportunity for Bay Area homeowners to improve air quality and reduce wood smoke pollution. The Clean Heating Efficiently with Electric Technology (HEET) Program (https://www.baaqmd.gov/?sc_itemid=B423E924-862D-4D18-9D5D-7A41B21F8F70&blm_aid=760521729) , developed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) (https://www.baaqmd.gov/en/) , offers financial incentives to help residents replace their freestanding wood stoves or wood-burning fireplace inserts with clean, energy-efficient electric heat pumps.
With up to $2 million in available funding, homeowners can receive rebates from $3,000 to $10,500 for replacing one stove or insert and $6,000 to $13,500 for replacing two. This program supports efforts to improve local air quality while providing efficient and sustainable home heating alternatives.
All Bay Area homeowners are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2025. Don't miss this opportunity to make your home healthier and more energy efficient while taking advantage of financial assistance.
