See you out there, San Mateo! Go Behind the Scenes at City Hall: Apply for the City Services Academy by August 6! Ever wonder what really happens behind the scenes at City Hall? The 2025 City Services Academy gives you a rare chance to peek behind the curtain and see how San Mateo’s departments work together to keep our community thriving. Applications are open now—but spots are limited and filling fast! The City Services Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that gives participants the opportunity to interact with City staff and learn about the challenges facing municipal government today. Participants will take part in case studies, site tours, class discussions, and hands-on experiences. They will also have opportunities to meet with the City Manager, Community Development Director, Police Chief, Public Works Director, City Librarian, Parks and Recreation Director, and a member of our City Council to learn about the City day-to-day operations, and how it implements new programs. City Services Academy is free to all participants. Participants must be sixteen or older, live or work in the City of San Mateo, and have an interest in City government. Meetings will be held Wednesday evenings, 6-9 p.m. from August 20 through Nov. 12 (excluding Sept. 24 and Oct. 1). The Academy will be held at different locations throughout the course of the program. To receive an application by mail/email, or for more information, please contact Laurie Strange at 650-522-7019 or lstrange@cityofsanmateo.org. Applications are due by August 6, 2025. Class size is limited, so apply now! Once we are at capacity, we will no longer accept applications for the 2025 City Services Academy. City Clerk's Office City Council Meeting Preview for the July 28 Meeting The following items will be discussed by the San Mateo City Council on Monday, July 28, 2025. Regular Meeting, 7:00pm Ceremonial Park and Recreation Month – Proclamation Disability Pride Month – Proclamation Rethink Waste 2025 "Trash to Art" Contest Winners - Recognition Old Business Amendment to Contribution Limits for City Candidate Campaigns – Ordinance Introduction and Public Financing Briefing The City Council will consider an Ordinance to amend San Mateo Municipal Code Chapter 2.80: "Contributions and Loans to City Candidate Campaigns” to adjust contribution limits for individuals to $1,000, thereby aligning with organizational contribution limits, link future contribution limits adjustments to the CPI, and enhance incentives for participation in the voluntary expenditure limits program, all in accordance with Council direction. The City Council will also receive an informational briefing on Public Financing of City Candidate Campaigns and provide direction on future action. New Business Emergency Rental Assistance Program - Adoption and Agreement The City Council will consider a Resolution to establish an Emergency Rental Assistance Program with $168,000 for FY 2025-26, approve an agreement with Samaritan House to administer the program, and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement. Mayor Newsom, along with City staff and six San Mateo students & three chaperones visited Toyonaka, Japan – showcasing our Sister City relationship and youth engagement initiatives at Osaka Expo. This international event brought together local government leaders, businesses, and communities from around the world to exchange ideas, share best practices, and address global challenges. Welcoming Toyonaka to San Mateo! Next week, San Mateo will welcome guests from Toyonaka. Our Youth Baseball Exchange tradition continues with friendly games hosted by the San Mateo Sister City Association. The project would provide 223 affordable housing units (25.7%), with 22 extremely-low income units, 22 very-low income units, and 179 low income units. The new commercial space would include a grocery store (Trader Joe’s) and a convenience store (7-Eleven). Public Works Mark Your Calendars for the Train Quiet Zone Project Community Meeting Coming August 4 The City of San Mateo invites you to attend a community meeting on the Train Horn Quiet Zone Program hosted by the Public Works Department. The meeting is on Monday, August 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, located at 725 Monte Diablo Avenue, San Mateo CA 94401. Learn about the City's efforts to reduce train horn noise and hear updates on proposals for potential changes at the rail crossings at Villa Terrace and E. Bellevue Avenue. Marina Library Restoration Project: Temporary Closure Begins August 10 The Marina Branch Library in the City of San Mateo will be undergoing improvements and will be temporarily closed starting August 10, 2025. The last day of service will be August 9, 2025. Construction will last for approximately 16 months. Improvements include structural repairs, accessibility upgrades, new interior, new furniture, refreshed children’s space and more.
