I had the incredible honor of throwing the first pitch at last weekend’s Youth Baseball Parade on our brand-new fields at Orange Memorial Park. Attended by several hundred, this event has blossomed into a cherished South City tradition, celebrating our phenomenal youth baseball teams and our vibrant community who join me in rallying behind them. A massive shoutout to the dedicated coaches and volunteer parents— and our Parks & Recreation staff not only for organizing this fantastic event but for investing in our future stars. And to the amazing youth players, you are the true all-stars! 🌟⚾ Here's to many more unforgettable moments on the field!   Exciting Emergency Preparedness Training! On March 8th, Fire Chief Matt Samson and Emergency Services Captain Ken Anderson teamed up with the South San Francisco Housing Authority to deliver an electrifying Disaster Preparedness workshop for aspiring Block Captains of C Street in District 5. Residents dove into hands-on skills like shutting off gas, water, and electricity, evacuation protocols, and using fire extinguishers. They also learned about various threats, from earthquakes to cyber hazards, and the importance of PPE and smoke detectors. Understanding the difference between an Evacuation Warning and an Evacuation Order was crucial, as was learning how to safely help others and communicate during a disaster. I’m very excited that we were able to offer this to our community! A huge shoutout to our Fire Department for their dedication and the leadership at our Housing Authority for partnering! Don't miss out—check the City's website for more emergency tips and resources, and to sign up to SMC Alerts. 🚒✨   City Council Meeting Recap At this week’s council meeting, we honored Ray Reyes, Wrestling Coach at El Camino High School and Police Activity League (PAL) Director for being named 2024-2025 Central Coast Section (CCS) Honor Coach. Learn More     COMMUNITY RESOURCES ☘️Trash Talk: Green isn’t just for St. Patrick’s Day☘️ Compost collection bins aren’t green by accident. Green is commonly associated with more than just clovers, good luck, and St. Patrick’s Day. It makes us think of springtime and all things earth-friendly. How exactly is compost earth-friendly, you ask? Let’s count the ways: Composting instead of landfilling preserves valuable landfill space and reduces the production/release of greenhouse gases that negatively impact our health and hasten global warming. Composting instead of putting food scraps down the garbage disposal saves water and electricity. Plus, it reduces the chances of plumbing damage caused by fat, oil and grease. Composting creates nutrient-rich soil for use on farms and in parks, yards, roadsides, and more. Compost sequesters carbon and retains water. Compost application helps prevent erosion and can lead to less runoff, improving water quality. If you’d like to learn more about composting as well as about waste reduction, reuse, recycling and other “green” topics, please come to the Earth Day Celebration and Open House on April 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p. m. at Blue Line Transfer in So. San Francisco. RSVPs are appreciated and will help with event planning. Visit www.ssfscavenger.com/earthday for details!     Stay informed with other City communications!
