How to Dispose of Trash Safely and Legally Illegal Dumping vs. Litter Illegal dumping and littering are both serious threats to our environment, but they differ in scale and impact. Illegal dumping is the large-scale, illegal disposal of waste, such as appliances, construction materials, or hazardous chemicals, often left on city streets, sidewalks, or private properties like parking lots and empty lots. This creates serious environmental hazards, including soil, water, and air contamination, and can lead to long-term risks to our health and ecosystems. In contrast, littering refers to the improper disposal of smaller items, like food wrappers, cigarette butts, and plastic bottles in public spaces. While each individual piece may seem insignificant, littering adds up over time, contributing to clogged storm drains, street flooding, harm to wildlife, and the unsightly blight that affects our neighborhoods. Both illegal dumping and littering damage public spaces, harm wildlife, and pollute our ecosystems. The good news is that there are solutions for San Mateo residents! Residents have access to convenient services like the Shoreway Environmental Center and Recology Bulky Item Pick Up, which provide safe and responsible ways to dispose of unwanted items. Be sure to visit their websites for information on accepted items, hours, and resources to help keep our community clean and green. For more options, visit the County's Sustainability Department page. Thank you for keeping San Mateo clean and green! Another way to help is to report illegal dumping and stormwater pollution below!
