Firefighters respond to reports of smoke in a multi-family residence

Residential Fire in the 100 Block of Lena Way
Post Date: 03/26/2025 9:50 a.m.

On Wednesday, March 26 at 6:14 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting smoke in a multi-story, multi-family residential apartment complex. The building's occupants self-evacuated before firefighters arrived.

Fire units were dispatched at 6:14 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 6:21 a.m. Units arrived to find smoke coming from a maintenance cart in the hallway of the building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with a water extinguisher and removed the smoldering debris from the building. Firefighters ventilated the hallway of the residual smoke.

Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to measure heat behind the drywall to ensure the fire did not spread beyond the maintenance cart. The Mountain View Police Department closed Lena Way for 40 minutes while fire units and equipment were on the scene.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The building was turned over to facilities maintenance before fire crews left the scene. The origin and cause of the fire were determined to be unattended rags, left soaked in wood stain, leading to spontaneous combustion. The damage was limited to smoke residue on the hallway walls and the materials on the maintenance cart.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the oils commonly used in oil-based paints and stains release heat as they dry. If the heat is not released into the air, it builds up. That is why a pile of oily rags can be dangerous. As the rags dry, the heat is trapped. The heat builds up and finally causes a fire.

By following a few safety tips, you can prevent these fires.

* Never leave cleaning rags in a pile. At the end of the day, take the rags outside to dry.
* Hang the rags outside or spread them on the ground. Weigh them down. Do this so they do not blow away. Make sure they are not in a pile. Keep them away from buildings.
* Put dried rags in a metal container. Make sure the cover is tight. Fill the container with a water and detergent solution. This will break down the oils.
* Keep containers of oily rags in a cool place. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Keep them away from other heat sources.
