South San Francisco Reports Significant Crime Reduction in 2024

Email from City of South San Francisco City Reports Declines in Thefts, Property Crime, and Violent Offenses in 2024 PRESS RELEASE Tuesday, March 18, 2025 South San Francisco Reports Significant Crime Reduction in 2024 City Reports Declines in Thefts, Property Crime, and Violent Offenses in 2024   SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 18, 2025 – The latest data from the South San Francisco Police Department (SSFPD) highlights a significant reduction in crime across multiple categories, reflecting the City’s ongoing commitment to public safety. Between 2022 and 2024, stolen vehicle incidents declined by 19%, thanks in part to the City’s Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. SSFPD recovered 108 stolen vehicles and made 40 related arrests. Police Chief Scott Campbell emphasized that stolen vehicles are no longer primarily used for joyriding but are often linked to more serious crimes, making each recovery a key step in preventing further criminal activity. Commercial burglaries dropped 46%, including break-ins at businesses, storage units, and construction sites. SSFPD successfully apprehended a burglary crew responsible for at least 10 incidents, including a series of ram-raid burglaries where suspects used vehicles to break through roll-up doors. The department also worked with East Bay law enforcement partners to identify three of five suspects involved in the Sunshine Gardens Shopping Center burglary spree, leading to arrest warrants. Additional crime reductions include: Vehicle burglaries down 27%, though hotspots remain near hotels and shopping centers. Residents are advised to keep valuables out of sight and park in well-lit, secure areas. Catalytic converter thefts down 88%, largely due to law enforcement crackdowns on illegal fencing operations. Some recent thefts involved armed suspects, and the public is urged to call 911 rather than intervene directly. Robberies down 61%, including cases where shoplifting escalated to threats of violence and incidents tied to domestic disputes. Residential burglaries down 20%. More than 63% of cases involved non-residences, such as hotel rooms, parking garages, mailrooms, and bicycle storage areas. Sexual assaults down 12%, though reports increased in 2023. In nearly all cases, the victim knew the assailant. A stranger assault case was swiftly resolved thanks to patrol officers. Homicides remained at zero in 2024. The city’s last five homicide cases were linked to domestic violence, reinforcing the importance of SSFPD’s partnership with CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse) to support survivors. SSFPD also ramped up efforts to reduce gun-related crime, recovering 42 firearms and assault rifles—a 24% increase over the previous year. Another major milestone was the 36% decline in mental health-related police interventions. SSFPD credits this success to its embedded clinician program, which connects individuals with long-term mental health support. Traffic safety has also improved, with a 37% decline in vehicle collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists. This progress is attributed to enhanced enforcement, public education, and ongoing infrastructure improvements designed to make South San Francisco more pedestrian- and bike-friendly. “These crime reductions reflect the dedication of our officers and the strong partnership between law enforcement and the community,” said Police Chief Scott Campbell. “By leveraging technology, proactive policing, and regional collaboration, we are making South San Francisco a safer place for everyone.” For more information about the City’s surveillance program and public safety initiatives, please visit the Police Department’s page on the City website. ### About the City of South San Francisco The City of South San Francisco proudly remains The Industrial City, a reflection of its steel mill and ship building past, redefined to reflect the innovative, entrepreneurial, and industrious spirit which has made South San Francisco the Biotech Capital of the World, with 217 active biotech companies and growing.
