This time of year, is a great time to reflect, and as I do, I can’t help but be grateful for our wonderful community. So many of you have donated or signed up to volunteer for our annual Holiday Drive to support our fellow neighbors – thank you! ¡Muchas Gracias! Lastly, please stay tuned for my Season’s Greetings message coming to your inboxes next week.   Dec. 26: Menorah Lighting Ceremony The City of South San Francisco invites the community to gather for our annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony, a cherished tradition celebrating the spirit of Hanukkah. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM in the Atrium of the Library | Parks & Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way. Enjoy donuts, coffee, and festive music as we come together to mark this special occasion. Learn More   Opportunities to Serve On Boards, Commissions, and Committees The City of South San Francisco is inviting residents to apply for positions on various City Commissions. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025. Interested individuals can apply online, or by e-mail to all-cc@ssf.net (one copy of the typed, completed, and signed application) or by mail: Office of the City Clerk P.O. Box 711 South San Francisco, CA 94083. Apply Here   Take the Age-Friendly Survey As an Age-Friendly City with AARP, we're creating an Age-Friendly Action Plan—and we need your input! We're just 15 survey responses away from our goal of 200. Your confidential responses will help shape this plan. Click here to take the survey (all questions must be answered)   Blueprint Buzz In the latest edition of the Blueprint Buzz, prepared by the Engineering team from our Public Works Department, they share how we’re rising to the challenge of sea level rise. Learn about our vision, why this issue matters, and what our next steps are. Learn More   Young Adult Novelist Convention: Short Story Contest Attention Teen and Young Adult Writers in South City! We want to hear your stories! This year's theme is Coming of Age in a Digital World. Open to 8th-12th graders living or attending school in San Mateo County. Stories can be any genre—realistic, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, dystopian, and more! Submissions must be original and 500 words or less. Applications are due December 31. Apply Here   DID YOU KNOW: Your address can qualify you as a resident to benefit from Parks & Recreation classes and programs? Any person who lives within the South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) is considered a resident for our classes and programs? Some San Bruno and Daly City addresses count! Find out if you are in the SSFUSD boundaries to benefit from our Parks & Recreation classes! Learn More   Upcoming Events Dec. 21: District 5 Holiday Event Dec. 23: Holiday Drive Distribution View the City Calendar for more events taking place all across the city!   South San Francisco Scavenger’s Holiday Schedule A friendly reminder from South San Francisco Scavenger: Collection service normally scheduled for Wednesdays will occur on Saturday, December 28, and Saturday, January 4, instead of on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There will be no change to services scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. SSF Scavenger Company offices and Blue Line Transfer will close at noon on ChristmasEve and New Year’s Eve. SSF Scavenger Company offices and Blue Line Transfer will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Christmas trees will be recycled after the holidays! Remove the stand and all decorations including lights and tinsel. Cut tree in half if taller than 6 feet. Do not bag or tie your tree. Place tree on or near the curb on your regular collection day before 5 am. An appointment is required to have trees picked up from multifamily residential complexes and businesses. Please call ahead to schedule.
