What to Do During a Power Outage (And What NOT to Do)
The greater part of District 3 had a power outage on March 28. I thought this would be a good time to review the basics of what to do, and what NOT to do.
*First:* Do NOT panic. Our power company is one of the best, and they will do everything in their “power” to get your power back on as quickly as possible. If you want to know if the power company is aware of the outage, call 408-615-5640 or visit SVP’s *website showing a map of current outages in Santa Clara [ https://www.siliconvalleypower.com/svp-and-community/outages-and-alerts/current-outages ]*. Your cell phone should still be working because most cell towers have a backup generator.
*Second:* Do NOT open your refrigerator or freezer. They will stay colder longer if left closed.
*Third:* Have a flashlight handy with enough batteries.
*Fourth:* Use this time to do something you have been putting off that does not require electricity. Read a book, play an instrument, clean out that closet, sort through those papers or get some rest!
If you have critical electrical needs (such as: medical equipment or a sump pump), a backup generator is a good idea to have on hand.
If you are driving, ALL intersections with signal lights become 4-way stops.
Please be careful of your safety and that of those around you. If you are *prepared [ https://www.santaclaraca.gov/our-city/departments-a-f/city-manager-s-office/office-of-emergency-management/disaster-preparedness-resources ]* you will not be afraid! Remember we live in an active earthquake area as well.
