DPW Receives Tree City USA Recognition and Growth Award
City staff in a tree

The benefits that trees bring to our urban environment are tremendous and the City of Santa Clara recognizes the importance of a robust and thriving urban forest. Tree City USA is a nationally recognized program that began in 1976 and is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters. Towns and cities that have received Tree City USA recognition take pride in this distinction and in the fact that their residents benefit from having a greener, healthier community. In recognition of its ongoing efforts to manage, expand, and preserve the urban forest, the City of Santa Clara has been named a Tree City USA community for the 38th time by the Arbor Day Foundation. The City has also earned the Tree City USA Growth Award for the 25th time, highlighting its continued commitment to environmental stewardship.

Happy Solstice! Now Water Smarter
Summer Solstice

Solstice is Friday, June 20, marking the official start of summer. As the weather heats up, check your irrigation to maximize water in your garden.

* Set programs to water between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m., a permanent policy in Santa Clara.
* For drip irrigation, make sure programs run for longer cycles (40-60 minutes) and less often (once per week, or twice for newly installed gardens) to make sure water gets to the root zone, not just the soil surface.
* Mulch
* For lawn watering, program to cycle and soak [ https://www.santaclaraca.gov/our-city/departments-g-z/water-sewer-utilities/water-conservation/conservation-tips ], ensuring less run off and more absorption to your lawn’s roots. Still mowing weekly? Set your mower blades higher. Longer lawns need less water and stay greener!

Visit SantaClaraCA.gov/GardenGuide [ https://www.santaclaraca.gov/our-city/departments-g-z/water-sewer-utilities/water-conservation/garden-guide ] for more summer watering tips.
