Where to Dispose of Household Batteries
*Where to Dispose of Household Batteries*
Household batteries contain toxic materials and should never be placed in curbside collection carts or bins. If not properly disposed of, old batteries can pose a threat to the environment. Drop off your used household batteries for recycling at any of the following City facilities during open business hours: City Hall Municipal Service Counter, all Santa Clara libraries, Senior Center, and Community Recreation Center. Batteries accepted include alkaline button cell, AA, AAA, C, D, 9V and lithium-ion. For safety purposes, please tape the ends of the battery terminals before placing into the battery recycling receptables. For more information, contact the Department of Public Works at *Environment@SantaClaraCA.gov*.
*Thank You for Making Our Winter Coat Drive a Success*
Every year the City of Santa Clara’s Environmental Programs team partners with Recology South Bay to host a winter coat donation drive. This event is a great way to reuse and recycle gently used winter coats. More importantly, it’s a way to help other families within the community. Due to the generous donations from Santa Clara residents, this year we collected over 1,000 winter coats that will be distributed to families in need throughout Santa Clara County with the help of Sacred Heart Community Services. A big thank you to all who participated and shared their warmth with others this holiday season!

Extra Cardboard Curbside Collection Reminder
*Extra Cardboard Curbside Collection Reminder:* Cardboard should be broken down and folded before being placed inside the blue recycle cart with the lid closed. Extra cardboard that cannot fit inside the blue cart should be flattened and neatly stacked into 4’ by 4’ sections. Place the flattened and stacked cardboard against the recycling cart for collection on your service day. To learn more about materials accepted through weekly curbside recycling collection, check out the Recycling Guide at *SantaClaraCA.gov/CleanSC* [ https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.santaclaraca.gov%2Fcleansc&data=05%7C02%7CTFreitas%40SantaClaraCA.gov%7C4e8b841cbc9747744c4308dd358b9921%7C28ea354810694e81aa0b6e4b3271a5cb%7C0%7C0%7C638725595855327754%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6MpBng930OHx71oJMO1AOy%2B29MYGdf%2B2nkT5jjSfFpM%3D&reserved=0 ].
Commercial Lawns Not Allowed to Drink Our Water
*Commercial Lawns Not Allowed to Drink Our Water:* That’s right, the *City of Santa Clara [ https://www.santaclaraca.gov/our-city/departments-g-z/water-sewer-utilities ]* and *Valley Water [ https://www.valleywater.org/WaterRestrictions ]* prohibit using drinking water for decorative grass at commercial properties. * Jan. 1, 2028: All other institutional properties and all commercial and industrial properties
Until the State law goes into effect, the City will focus on education and assisting Commercial, Industrial and Institutional (CII) properties to reach compliance with rebates that help fund the conversion of their lawns to water-wise plants. CII properties are eligible for up to $110,000 per site in rebates.
