Alta Housing administers the program on behalf of the City. A lottery will be held on March 11, 2025 to select 200 households for its BMR Housing waiting list. The application period opens February 3 and closes February 28, 2025 to join the waiting list and become eligible for future BMR home purchase opportunities. Chinese Lunar New Year Celebrations This Weekend & Beyond Presented by Palo Alto Chinese Community and sponsored by the City of Palo Alto join your neighbors at the 2025 Palo Alto Lunar New Year Fair at Mitchell Park Community Center this Sunday, January 26 from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and enjoy festivities for everyone. Additionally, celebrate "the Year of the Snake" at allcove’s Lunar New Year Celebration on Wednesday, January 29 at 4 p.m. at their Palo Alto location, 2741 Middlefield Rd. Ste. 102. Plus, bring the kids to themed storytimes on Friday, January 24 at 11 a.m. at Downtown Library and Tuesday, January 28 at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Children’s Library. Children’s Library Renovations Start Sunday, February 16, Closed Through May Children's Library will be closed Sunday, February 16 - May for renovations including new carpeting and painting, plus installation of an Automated Materials Handling system to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience. Throughout the closure, Children’s Library programs and storytimes will move to Rinconada Library. All other libraries will remain open during their regular hours. Sign Up for Emergency Alerts at Home & Work This simple step can ensure you stay informed if an emergency occurs, while at work, visiting your favorite destination or at home. Recipe of the Week: Warm up on cold winter mornings with this Quinoa Breakfast Porridge recipe—topping it off with your favorite seasonal fruit. Try using leftover quinoa to make this recipe even more sustainable. Family Resources Go Bag vs. Emergency Kit: Being prepared for emergencies means creating specific kits and bags tailored to your household needs. A “Go Bag” is a kit that you assemble that can be easily picked up and taken with you or stored in your car. An emergency kit may be in a carrier that can contain more supplies including stores of food and water, power supplies, and more to help if you’re sheltering in place. Silicon Valley Reads 2025: Join Silicon Valley Reads, an annual program bringing together local community members of all ages through selected books and free events. This year’s theme is “Empowering Humanity: Technology for a Better World.” Join the live-streamed kickoff event featuring a conversation with authors and experts on technology, humanity, and our future on Thursday, January 30 at 7 p.m. Future events include AI programs, author talks, art exhibits, and film screenings. International Holocaust Remembrance Day: January 27 marks the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camp’s liberation. On Monday, January 27, watch livestreams of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Haunted by Auschwitz 80 Years Later virtual program and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum’s anniversary commemoration. Explore survivors’ experiences, view online exhibitions, a UNESCO photo essay, and read a book to reflect and learn more. Brazilian Film Screenings: Enjoy contemporary Brazilian cinema through a monthly film screening series. This month, watch a screening of the film Araby about a young man starting a ten-year journey in search of a better life on Saturday, January 25 at 3 p.m. at Rinconada Library. The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Enjoy a performance with puppets of the classic children’s tale and its messages of creativity, belonging, and growth at the Palo Alto Children’s Theatre. Tickets can be purchased for shows happening Wednesdays through Sundays from January 29 through February 16.
