This project consists of proposed updates to the City’s local Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) Ordinance to address local needs and ordinance functionality. The updates also address comments provided by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) for compliance with State ADU law. More information can be found on the Policy & Zoning Code Update Efforts page. All meeting materials will be available online through the Public Meeting Portal. Draft San Mateo Historic Context Statement Published As part of San Mateo’s work to update its Historic Preservation Policies, the City has published a draft Citywide Historic Context Statement and a summary of community engagement so far. Both documents are now available on the project website. These materials reflect the feedback community members have shared at meetings, events, and through online comments since June 2025. They provide important background that will help guide updates to the Historic Preservation Ordinance. We invite you to take a look and share your thoughts by emailing historicpolicy@cityofsanmateo.org. In mid-January, 2026, the City will be hosting a virtual community meeting (date TBD) to review these materials along with a forthcoming draft ordinance updates. Following the community meeting, the City Council will hold a study session (tentatively set for Jan. 26, 2026) to receive community input and provide policy direction. Public hearings to consider adoption of the updated historic policies are planned for March and April of 2026. If you’d like to stay informed about upcoming meetings and new project materials, please sign up for email updates. Public Works Humboldt Bike Lane Alternative - Going to the Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission The Humboldt Street Bike Lane Alternative community engagement process is complete, which included three public workshops held in June, August, and October 2025. The purpose of this effort was to explore the feasibility of an alternative bike connection in the form of a bike boulevard on Fremont Street and/or Idaho streets. Staff will present the findings and recommendations from this process to the Sustainability and Infrastructure Commission on Dec. 10, 2025 and will seek direction/recommendation from the Commission. The Commission meeting will be held in the Oak Room in the City's Main Library at 55 West Third Avenue at 7 p.m. Feedback from the Commission will be presented to the City Council in February. Creek Wet Weather Preparedness - Help Keep Our Natural Creeks Flowing Safely As we head into the rainy season, the City’s Public Works Department is asking all residents with natural creeks on or adjacent to their property to help keep these waterways healthy and clear. Well-maintained creeks play an essential role in protecting homes, infrastructure, and local wildlife—especially during periods of heavy rain. When creeks become blocked with sediment, fallen branches, large debris, or illegally dumped materials, water flow can be restricted. This can lead to flooding, erosion, clogged storm drains, and property damage. By contrast, a clean and healthy creek not only reduces flooding risk, but can also enhance neighborhood aesthetics and even improve property values. Your Responsibility as a Creek-Side Property Owner Except in cases where the City has ownership or delegated maintenance responsibility, property owners are generally responsible for maintaining the portion of the natural creek that runs through or along their property. This includes keeping the area reasonably free of: Trash and litter Excessive vegetation Fallen branches or large woody debris Any materials that may contaminate the creek or obstruct the flow of water Regular maintenance helps ensure that creeks continue to function as natural drainage channels, especially during wet weather events. Helpful Clean-Up Tips Remove yard waste. Grass clippings, leaves, and other garden material do not belong in creeks—they can contribute to erosion, block water flow, and worsen flooding. Remove litter and non-native materials. Collect any visible trash or potential pollutants to help keep the creek ecosystem healthy. Avoid disturbing natural habitat. Some large woody material is part of a functioning creek ecosystem. However, if a large log or fallen branch is redirecting water and causing erosion or flooding, removal or modification may be appropriate. Please contact the California Department of Fish and Game at (707) 428-2002 before starting any work to ensure activities comply with environmental regulations. Stay Safe while Cleaning Wear gloves, closed-toe shoes, and protective clothing. If kids are helping, they should be accompanied by an adult at all times. Do not handle wildlife. Do not touch live or dead animals. For injured or distressed wildlife, contact the Peninsula Humane Society at (650) 340-7022. Do Not Alter the Creek Channel Excavation, grading, or modifying the streambed or banks can cause environmental harm and typically requires permits from multiple environmental regulatory agencies. Recycle what you can. Cans, bottles, and other recyclable materials found during cleanup should be placed in the appropriate recycling bins.
