It's the Most Wonderful Time for Celebrating and Saving Water!
Full Dishwasher
During the holiday season, we all look forward to reuniting with our loved ones and enjoying home-cooked meals! When it comes to cleaning up after those big family dinners, a high-efficiency dishwasher is our best friend!
Scrape the big leftover food into the food scraps bin. There is no need to pre-rinse the dishes. Most modern dishwashers can handle a bit of food residue, so pre-rinsing only adds one more chore to your list and uses extra water.
Also, make sure to run your dishwasher only when it’s full. Each cycle uses nearly the same amount of water and energy, no matter how many dishes there are inside. By washing full loads only, you maximize every drop of water used and reduce the number of loads overall. This can save the average family about 320 gallons of water per year [ https://www.epa.gov/watersense/statistics-and-facts#:~:text=Running%20the%20dishwasher%20only%20when%20it%27s%20full%20can%20eliminate%20one%20load%20of%20dishes%20per%20week%20and%20save%20the%20average%20family%20nearly%20320%20gallons%20of%20water%20annually. ].
Visit Drought and Water Conservation [ https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/homes-streets-and-property/water-and-sewer/drought-and-water-conservation ] to learn more water-saving tips. Let’s make this holiday season enjoyable and sustainable!

Keep Your Pipes FOG-Free This Holiday Season
FOG poured in foodscraps bin
Will you be cooking this holiday season? Remember not to F.O.G. up the drain! F.O.G. (Fat, Oils and Grease) solidify when they cool. If F.O.G. accumulates in the pipes, clogs and blockages can form in the sewer system. Sunnyvale’s Wastewater Collections Supervisor, Jerry Barajas, says, “Clogged pipes are no fun for anyone. They can cause sewer backups into your home, and it can be hard to get the pipes clean and flowing again.” Sewer backups and overflows cause health hazards and environmental harm.
Scrape cooled meat drippings, sauces and small amounts of cooking oil into a clear plastic bag and place in your FoodCycle bin. If you have large quantities of cooled cooking oil, pour it into a clear screw-top container and drop it off at the SMaRT Station®, 301 Carl Road. Single-family residents can also leave the container next to split carts on collection day. By taking these steps, you can help protect your community's pipes and the environment.

Stories from students
Playing to Learn: How a Video Game Teaches Sustainability
Owen writer of stories from students article
Imagine answering questions about your lifestyle and being told, "If everyone lived like you, we would need X Earths."
When I got my results in my environmental science class, I felt lost. Why was my number so high? What should I do?
In class, I learned small but important things, such as disposing of medicine properly or unplugging devices when not in use. These habits helped me live better for the environment.
But most people don't know about these habits. High schoolers who haven't taken this class don't know. Working adults and elderly people don't know. You probably don't know all of them either. So, I created Living Footprints, a 3D game where you explore real-looking homes. You click on everyday objects and learn how they affect the environment. Living Footprints makes learning fun and easy. One person at a time, starting with you, we can help the environment.
The app is being utilized as an educational tool at the Mountain View, Cupertino and San Jose libraries.
"About the Student: Owen is a senior at Mountain View High School. After taking an environmental science class, Owen wanted to use technology to teach people about helping the environment. "
