News from the Mayor - Mayor Lisa M. Gillmor

Dear Santa Clara Neighbors,

What a month it has been. In June, Santa Clara made history as the only city in the world to host both Super Bowl LX and FIFA World Cup in the same year, and we delivered!  Now, as we move into July, I want to take a moment to celebrate what we accomplished together, share the incredible athletes, and dignitaries who came through our city, and look ahead to a summer packed with community celebration.

A World Cup Santa Clara Will Never Forget

World Cup Photo

Over 19 unforgettable days, Levi’s Stadium hosted six FIFA World Cup matches, five group stage games plus a Round of 32 knockout match, welcoming ten nations and more than 400,000 fans through our gates.  We opened with Qatar and Switzerland playing a hard-fought draw, followed by Austria’s dramatic 3-1 win over Jordan, a historic night, since it marked Austria’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years and Jordan’s very first ever.  From there we saw Paraguay edge Türkiye on a goal scored 64 seconds into the match, Algeria’s stunning comeback win over Jordan and Paraguay and Australia battling to a goalless draw in a sold-out stadium.

The USA – Bosnia and Herzegovina Round of 32 match was a magical and memorable finale to Santa Clara’s six-game World Cup run at Levi’s Stadium.  For those of us in the stands, and for Santa Clarans cheering from across our community, it was a proud civic moment that showed the world the heart, energy, and spirit of our city.

Welcome the World’s Teams, Dignitaries and Royalty

Hosting a tournament of this magnitude meant welcoming the world to our doorstep and I was honored to personally greet so many of the athletes, coaches and dignitaries who came through Santa Clara.

I was honored to personally welcome the Austrian and Swiss national teams, along with their coaches and staff, as well as Consul Generals, to Santa Clara.  Hosting these remarkable athletes and their representatives showcased our city’s hospitality and brought the world a little closer to Santa Clara.

I also had the privilege of meeting Their Majesties King Abdullah II of Jordan, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Jordan, whose country’s national team match made their first ever appearance right here on our field.  Alongside Dina Kawar, the Jordanian Ambassador to the United States, Congressman Liccardo, Supervisor Lee, SJC Director of Aviation, Mookie Patel, and Deanna Tryon and Maryam Murduroglu, from the Silicon Valley Office of Protocol, I greeted the Jordanian Royal Family on the tarmac, a moment that captured just how far people traveled, and how much this tournament meant to them.

These visits were about far more than soccer.  Alongside the matches themselves, many of these delegations took part in business forums, trade discussions, and investment conversations happening around the World Cup, using the tournament as an opportunity to strengthen economic and cultural ties with Silicon Valley. Each of these visits was a reminder that when the world comes to Santa Clara, they don’t just see a stadium, they see our city, our people and everything that makes this community special.  We had the privilege of welcoming the Consul General of Qatar, Consul General of India, Consul General of Paraguay, Consul General of Cyprus, and others who took part in our business forums, trade discussions and investment conversations happening around the World Cup.

Intel Breaks Ground on Bowers Campus Expansion
Intel Groundbreaking

Santa Clara’s role as a global technology hub continues to grow.  I was proud to join Intel leadership, including Lip-Bu-Tan, Naga Chandrasekaran, and Frank Abboud, along with our partners at Skanska for the groundbreaking of Intel’s new manufacturing and utility facility at its Bowers campus. This project builds on more than 5 decades of Intel’s presence in Santa Clara, and as I noted at the ceremony, it carries forward a legacy that began when Intel first arrived in our city during my father’s mayoralty. As America celebrates our 250 Anniversary, investments like this one are a powerful statement about Santa Clara’s continued role at the center of what’s possible in Silicon Valley.

A City on the World Stage

From welcoming kings and ambassadors to cheering on our USA Home team and enjoying the company of our neighbors at a Friday night concert, this summer has shown the very best of Santa Clara: a city than can host the world on one night and gather around a picnic blanket the next. Thank you for making this such a memorable season, and I look forward to seeing you at a Concert in the Park, a Watch Party, a Night Market, or a National Night Out block party soon.

With gratitude and Santa Clara pride,
