San Mateo homeowners are eligible for up to $100 and landscaping businesses with an active San Mateo business license are eligible for up to $500 for the purchase of an electric leaf blower and batteries. Electric leaf blowers create less noise and less pollution than gas leaf blowers. Share this information with your gardener or neighbor, together we can make an impact. Vendor applications are open for 2025 HEAD WEST, which takes place every third Sunday of the month through December, and is located on pedestrian-only South B Street, between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave. This event is co-hosted by the City of San Mateo and the Downtown San Mateo Association. City Clerk's Office City Council Meeting Preview for the August 18 Meeting The following items will be discussed by the San Mateo City Council on Monday, August 18, 2025. Click the button below or here for the full City Council Agenda and Packet: Special Meeting, 5:30 p.m. Revenue Enhancement Options — Informational The City Council will consider General Fund revenue enhancement options, many of which will require a ballot measure, and provide staff with direction on which option(s) to move forward for additional consideration. Regular Meeting, 7 p.m. Ceremonial: College of San Mateo Softball Championship – Recognition Commend the CSM Bulldogs Softball team for their 2025 3C2A Softball State Championship victory! 101st Airborne – Recognition Linda Patterson will receive commendations for her decades of service and support to the 101st Airborne Adopted Unit program. Sue Lempert – Recognition Former Mayor Sue Lempert, will be recognized for her years of service to the San Mateo Daily Journal newspaper. Karen Huang, Finance Director – Recognition The City Council will share their appreciation and say goodbye to San Mateo's outgoing Finance Director, Karen Huang. Old Business Train Quiet Zone Project Status Update (Please note this was originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m.) The City Council will receive a staff presentation on the status of the Train Quiet Zone implementation efforts and provide direction on potential modifications to the railroad crossings at Villa Terrace and East Bellevue Avenue, which may include closures at both locations, or a closure at Villa Terrace and a median extension at E Bellevue Avenue, that would alter local parking and vehicle circulation. New Business City Council Appointments to External Agencies and Liaison Roles — Amendment The City Council will review and provide direction to amend the Council Appointments list for 2025 to add a liaison to the San Mateo Police Activities League. Public Meeting Portal Celebrating The Voting Rights Act of 1965 Sixty years ago, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law on August 6, 1965, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights and democracy in America. The City of San Mateo honors the bravery and determination of those who marched, spoke out, and stood up for justice. Their efforts remind us that the right to vote is fundamental and must be protected. Let’s continue to build a future where every vote counts and every voice is heard. Public Works Community Workshop #2: Humboldt Bike Lane Alternatives on August 25, 2025 Join us for the second of three Humboldt Street Bike Lane Alternatives community workshops exploring the future of bike lanes, pedestrian safety, and street lighting in the North Central neighborhood on Humboldt, Fremont, and Idaho streets. At this meeting we will seek community feedback on safe walking and biking design concepts for Idaho and Fremont Streets. Modifications to the railroad crossings at Villa Terrace and East Bellevue Avenue are being proposed as part of the Train Quiet Zone implementation. The proposed changes include closing Villa Terrace and either closing Bellevue Avenue or extending its medians. Both options would affect the surrounding neighborhood, including changes to parking availability, traffic routing, and other related impacts. IMPORTANT: The City Council time has changed to August 18, 2025 at 7p.m. Please note, Council may discuss other items before the Train Quiet Zone Program topic. Paddock Park Playground Closure The playground at Paddock Park will be closed starting Monday, August 18, 2025, for repair and replacement of the poured rubber playground flooring. Reminder - Poplar Creek Golf Course Well Drilling Project Starting August 18, a portion of the course (second hole, adjacent to N. Bayshore Blvd.) will be temporarily closed due to a well drilling project essential for improving irrigation and sustainability. While we don’t anticipate significant impacts to course users, please be aware of the temporary changes: Minor traffic congestion may occur during equipment and material deliveries The back and middle tee markers will be moved to the forward tee boxes during construction Temporary fencing and screening for protection from errant tee shots We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as we work to improve the course’s long-term sustainability. East Hillsdale Park Playground Improvements Project – Construction Starts Sept. 2 Construction on the East Hillsdale Park Playground Improvements Project is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025. Once construction begins the entire park will be closed for the duration of construction (approximately 12 months). The playground and surrounding area will be completely renovated as part of the Parks and Recreation Capital Improvement Plan. The renovation includes installation of new, modern play equipment, repaving of the perimeter pathway and upgraded pathway lighting. Additionally, trenching and excavation work will be conducted to improve storm drainage. Tree Applications Move to City Hall In an effort to enhance service and streamline your experience, the Parks and Recreation Department will be relocating the processing of protected trees applications from the Park Yard to City Hall effective Sept. 2, 2025.
