IN-PERSON: Listening with the Wild: Eco-Composer Cheryl Leonard

*Saturday, August 2, 3 to 4 p.m.*

Join us for a sonic journey with composer Cheryl E. Leonard, who crafts immersive soundscapes using field recordings and musical instruments made from shells, bones, rocks, seaweed, driftwood, and more. Leonard will discuss how she has collaborated with wild environments across California, and in both Antarctica and the Arctic, to create music that deepens our connections with the natural world. She will share field recording successes and defeats, instrument-building eureka moments, how to play music on limpet shells, and strategies for notating fizzy icebergs. Her presentation will feature unique audio examples and live demonstrations of natural-object musical instruments. An audience Q & A will follow her talk.

 

*Cheryl E. Leonard *is a San Francisco-based composer, performer, field recordist, and instrument builder. She uses microphones and amplification to explore sonic intricacies, highlighting unique voices and soundscapes while addressing environmental issues.

*Sunday, August 3, 2 to 5 p.m.*

Join us for drop-in, free play board games in the Library Program Room.

 

Bring a group, or come alone and make new friends. We'll have strategy games, family friendly games and card games, including "Ticket to Ride", "Settlers of Catan", "Clue" and more. All games are first come, first served.

 

This year's Summer Reading theme is "Level Up at Your Library". Sign up on Beanstack [ https://sunnyvale.beanstack.org/ ] or pick up a paper reading log at the Library to join the challenge. Summer Reading runs June 1 to August 31.

Plastic Free July Tip of the Week: Avoid Single-Use Bathroom Products

There are many simple solutions for the bathroom which not only will reduce plastic waste and have a positive impact for the environment but can also have a positive impact on your budget too!

 

If you're purchasing pre-made products, make sure to go without the plastic packaging. There are a number of brands that supply shampoo, conditioner, and more in bar form without any packaging. Other sustainable bathroom options include refilling your own containers at a bulk goods store, switching to bamboo toothbrushes, and shifting to safety razors with recyclable blades.
