*Mandatory Composting and Recycling*

Compost

To ensure compliance with California state law (California Senate Bill 1383) and the City of Mountain View Municipal Code, all local businesses are required to properly sort waste and subscribe to sufficient compost, recycling, and trash services.

*What You Need to Know*:

* *Mandatory Services*: All businesses must have dedicated recycling (for cardboard, paper, and containers) and compost services (for food scraps, food-soiled paper, and plant debris) in addition to trash service.
* *Required Sorting*: Provide color-coded bins (blue= recycling, green= compost, grey/black= trash) for all employees and in customer disposal areas. The bins must include City-approved signage. Line compost bins with clear plastic bags or compostable bags.
* *Required Training*: Educate your employees on proper waste sorting at least annually. Periodically inspect bins for contamination and provide more staff training as needed.
* *Cost Savings*: The recycling rate is bundled with your trash payment and is therefore at no additional cost. Also, adding a compost service reduces your trash needs.
* *Free Support*: The City’s exclusive hauler, Recology, offers waste audits, employee training, indoor containers, and signage to support materials sorting.
