Help Shape Mountain View’s Dark Sky Ordinance

Night sky full of stars over a line of trees

The City of Mountain View is developing a Citywide Dark Sky Ordinance to establish exterior lighting standards that help reduce light pollution, protect local wildlife, and preserve the community’s ability to view the night sky.

The ordinance will provide clear guidance for lighting levels, fixture specifications, and operational standards for private development throughout Mountain View.

Give your input through the online survey, which is available in English [ https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MVDSOSurvey ], Spanish [ https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MVCieloOscuro ], and Chinese [ https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MVDSO_Chinese ]. The survey is open through Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Your feedback will help ensure the new regulations and guidelines reflect the City’s values and environmental goals.

Lot 12 Parking Lot to Close in January

Lot 12 Alt Parking Map with Logo

The City-owned Lot 12 parking lot will permanently close to public use in January to make way for the construction of a new affordable housing project. Lot 12 is located across from City Hall and the Mountain View Public Library. Additionally, the southbound driving lane on Bryant Street will be closed to traffic for the entire construction period to ensure safe access and staging for construction.

Visitors are encouraged to use nearby parking garages and surface lots (see the map for alternative parking locations). The City of Mountain View appreciates the community’s patience and support as this important project moves forward. Construction is anticipated to begin in January/February 2026 and take approximately two years to complete. Once finished, the project will deliver much-needed affordable homes and bring new energy, residents, and foot traffic to Downtown Mountain View. This effort reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to expanding housing opportunities and fostering a vibrant, inclusive downtown.

As part of the City’s new Downtown MV in Motion initiative, stay tuned for future updates about improvements, activities, and construction alerts for Downtown Mountain View.

Holiday Trash Collection and String Lights Take-back Options

A picture of holiday string lights coming out a box

*No trash collection will occur on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and New Year's Day Jan. 1, 2026.* If your collection day falls on or after one of these holidays, collection will occur one day later that week. Use the Recology Collection Calendar [ https://www.recology.com/recology-mountain-view/collection-calendar/ ] widget to see how holidays impact the collection schedule for your address.

Holiday string lights should not be placed in trash or recycling carts as they can become tangled, potentially causing damage to equipment and resulting in collection delays. Instead, properly dispose of string lights through the following options:

* Drop-off for free at the SMaRT Station [ https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/homes-streets-and-property/recycling-and-garbage/smart-station-recycling-center ] at 301 Carl Road in Sunnyvale. Look for the e-waste collection container in the Buy-Back and Drop-Off Center.
* You can mail the lights to the Holiday LEDs recycling program [ https://www.holidayleds.com/free-light-recycling ].
* Dispose of them safely by making a free drop-off appointment at HHW.org [ https://hhw.sccgov.org/home ] or call 408-299-7300.
