ONLINE: Expressions of Gender in Asian Art*

Monday, June 16, 7 to 8 p.m.

Ambiguous and gender fluid depictions have existed in Asian art for thousands of years. The belief in non-duality contributes to these purposely ambivalent portrayals. Explore some of the fascinating ways various Asian cultures have represented people and deities as male, female and nonbinary.

 

This one-hour online lecture by Asian Art Museum community speaker docent John Kouletsis is followed by a Q&A. John Kouletsis is a docent both for the School Programs and for the Community Speakers Program at the Asian Art Museum. An architect by training, John lived for four years in Japan where he taught and researched medieval Japanese domestic and residential architecture. After returning to the United States, he was Kaiser Foundation Health Plan’s national chief architect for capital projects. He currently sits on several committees at the Asian Art Museum and is on the Board of Directors for the Society for Asian Art.

We will meet in the Laurel Room at the Sunnyvale Senior Center to discuss the books we have chosen to read. 

 

This week we'll be covering "The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters [ https://sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S173C1977124 ] "by Susan Page. 

 

Most books will have 4-5 copies that can be (honor) borrowed at the Senior Center Desk. Please bring them back to the desk if you finish before the event date so that others may also borrow them. On the meeting date, please bring any copies to the meeting to return them.

 

You do not need to be a member of the Senior Center nor have a library card at Sunnyvale Public Library to attend the Book Group.

Invigorate your day with energy and intention in this dynamic all-level Vinyasa class. Designed for both beginners and experienced yogis, this practice combines breath and movement to awaken your body and calm your mind. Expect a thoughtful sequence that blends gentle warm-ups, flowing transitions and strength-building poses, ending with grounding stretches and relaxation. Modifications and variations are offered throughout, making this class accessible and challenging for everyone.

 

This class will take place in the Library Program Room. Registration is not required. Bring your own yoga mat and any props that may serve you. Yoga mats will not be provided.
