The World Cup Is Finally Here!

FIFA World Cup

After years of preparation, Santa Clara is ready to take its place on the world stage. Six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be played at Levi’s Stadium right here in our city, beginning June 13, and I could not be prouder of what our community has built together to welcome visitors from every corner of the globe.

To the billions of soccer fans who will have their eyes on Santa Clara this summer: you will find a city with world-class infrastructure, a spirit of innovation, and, most of all, the warm, small-town soul that makes Santa Clara truly special. We are proud to show you who we are. Welcome to our home.

Building the Energy Future of Santa Clara

Photo from a groundbreaking ceremony

This May, I was proud to join Silicon Valley Power and regional partners at the groundbreaking for the Power the South Bay project, a major transmission infrastructure investment that will add approximately 1,000 megawatts of new capacity to our regional grid.

As Santa Clara continues to grow as a hub for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technology, reliable and affordable energy is not a luxury—it is a necessity. This project will strengthen grid reliability for our residents and businesses for decades to come, and it reflects exactly the kind of forward-thinking investment that keeps Santa Clara competitive and prepared for the future.

I am proud that our city-owned utility, Silicon Valley Power, is leading the way. For more information, visit SiliconValleyPower.com [ https://www.siliconvalleypower.com/ ].

A Month of Celebrations: Congratulations, Graduates!
Graduation

June is graduation season, and this year it is especially meaningful for our family. Two of my three children are crossing the stage this month. My son, Zach, has earned his master’s degree in education and will be stepping into the classroom as a high school teacher. My daughter, Chloe, has earned her master’s degree in counseling psychology and is ready to make a profound difference in people’s lives. I am one very proud mom.

But this congratulations belongs to every Santa Clara graduate and their families. Whether you are finishing high school, earning your bachelor’s degree, completing a graduate degree, or achieving a certification that opens a new door, your hard work matters.

Education is the foundation upon which we build our futures, and the graduates of today are the leaders, teachers, healers, engineers, and public servants who will shape our city and our world tomorrow.

To all graduates: we are proud of you. Your community is cheering for you.

A Commitment to Transparency—and a Disappointment

Transparency

Readers of this newsletter know that transparency in the use of public funds has been a consistent priority of mine as your Mayor. Santa Clara voters passed Measure J, which explicitly prohibits the use of City General Fund money to subsidize stadium operations. That protection only means something if we can verify that it is being honored, and right now, that verification is being denied to the public.

Millions of dollars in City General Fund costs have been incurred in connection with both Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup 2026. Contracts created by the City Manager and City Attorney, and ratified by a majority of the City Council, establish clear repayment obligations for these costs. Yet the online public dashboard has not been updated to reflect them.

When city staff did not move to schedule a public update on repayment, I brought the matter to a Council vote. Unfortunately, the majority chose not to agendize it.

On May 26, I moved to place a simple repayment update on a future Council agenda. Councilmembers Hardy, Chahal, Jain, and Park voted against it, and I was genuinely shocked. We spent years publicly planning these events, debating the contracts and costs in open session. Refusing to tell the public how those obligations were ultimately resolved is like inviting everyone to watch the game and then turning off the lights before the final score. That vote is public record and available to watch online. Our residents deserve better.

I want to sincerely thank Councilmember Kelly Cox and Vice Mayor Albert Gonzalez for standing with the public and casting their votes in support of transparency on this important issue.

Happy Father's Day!
Father's Day

This Father's Day, I want to send warm wishes to every dad, stepdad, grandfather, godfather, father figure, and mentor in our Santa Clara community—and to all the many forms that fatherhood takes. Thank you for the love, guidance, and sacrifice you give every day.

For me, this day carries special meaning. My father, former Mayor Gary Gillmor, is the reason I love this city as deeply as I do. He showed me by example what it means to serve your community with integrity. This year, we will be celebrating his 90th birthday, a milestone that fills our whole family with joy and gratitude.

With gratitude and pride for our great city,
