Tax-Advantaged Investment for Children Yurie Nakamura, Paper Dolls Job Opportunities with the City City Manager's Office City Services Academy Applications Due Aug. 5 We are now accepting applications for San Mateo's 2026 City Services Academy. The City Services Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that gives participants the opportunity to interact with City staff and learn about the challenges facing municipal government today. Participants will take part in case studies, site tours, class discussions and hands-on experiences. They will also have opportunities to meet with the City Manager, department directors and a member of City Council to learn about the City's day-to-day operations and how it implements new programs. City Services Academy is free to all participants. Participants must be 16 or older, live or work in the City of San Mateo, and have an interest in city government. Meetings will be held Wednesday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m., from August 19 through Nov. 4 (excluding Sept. 30). Learn More About the City Services Academy City Clerk's Office City Accepting Applications for New Historic Resources Commission The City is accepting applications for the new Historic Resources Commission through Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 5 p.m. The Commission will implement San Mateo's Historic Preservation Ordinance and provide recommendations to the City Council on matters relating to historic landmark and district designations, historic property alterations and appeals. The Commission will also support updates to the Historic Building Survey, the development of a historic plaque program, the evaluation of preservation incentives and improvements to historic preservation enforcement. We're seeking community members who are passionate about local history, architecture and historic preservation to serve as the Commission's five inaugural adult members. Apply by Wednesday, Sept.16, at 5 p.m. on the City's Boards and Commissions web page. City Council Nomination Period Closes August 7 The candidate filing period for this year's City Council election closes next week on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 5 p.m. If you're interested in serving your community as a member of the City Council, now is the time to begin the candidate filing process. Prospective candidates from Districts 1, 3 and 5 should contact the City Clerk's Office to schedule an appointment to receive and complete their nomination materials. Everyone in the community is invited to join us on Tuesday evening, August 4, 2026, for our free public safety event at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center (725 Monte Diablo Ave.) for National Night Out (NNO), America's Night Out Against Crime. From 5:30 to 8 p.m. the San Mateo Police Department is hosting a community safety fair as a reminder that we won't tolerate crime in San Mateo. Join McGruff the Crime Dog, San Mateo PD and City of San Mateo representatives as we celebrate our police-community partnership with fun for the kids, music, public safety vehicles, community resources, treats, crime prevention tips and raffles. Celebrate a major milestone with us on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the Main Library marks its 20th anniversary with a day of music, dance and community festivities. The fun will begin with the grand opening of PLUR Coffee’s newest location at 11 a.m. on the third floor.
