History Spotlight: The 1955 Floods

Historical photo of cars driving along a flooded El Camino in 1955

The arrival of winter in California usually coincides with the return of the rain. Hopefully, rainfall is plentiful enough to fill reservoirs and replenish alpine snowcaps, the melting of which supplies the state with water during the dry months. However, on a few occasions, heavy December rainfall proved disastrous for Mountain View and the surrounding area.

In December 1955, according to data from the Santa Clara County Flood Control and Water District, nearly 47 inches of rain fell over 19 separate days, including a 12-day stretch, at Saratoga Gap in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the source of Permanente Creek and Stevens Creek. On December 23, over 11 inches of rain fell at Saratoga Gap while over four inches fell even in lower-elevation Los Altos. This caused Permanente Creek to overflow its banks, flooding streets and buildings.

One motorist abandoned their car in the middle of a “lake” at Springer Road and El Camino Real and police officers erected barriers and stood guard at the Mountain View exits along Bayshore Highway (now Highway 101) to prevent cars from driving on to the impassible road. Severe winds accompanied the rain and damaged trees across town. Lesser amounts of rain through Christmas and the succeeding days kept the creeks at high ebb and periodically spilling into Mountain View and Sunnyvale neighborhoods, many of which also had to contend with what the "Mountain View Register "described as an “ocean of mud” left by receding water.

Today, flood control measures imposed on area creeks in the years following the 1955 floods have made it less likely that similar flooding will occur, but nature may still grant Mountain View an unwished-for wet Christmas at some point in the future.

If you are curious to learn more about Mountain View’s history, we invite you to visit to the Mountain View History Center [ https://library.mountainview.gov/learn/mountain-view-history/history-center-collection ] on the second floor of the Library during our open hours on Tuesdays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
