Defiant to the Last
IN PERSON: Defiant to the Last: Screening & Filmmaker Discussion

*Saturday, May 30, 2:30 to 4 p.m.*

Join us for a screening of "Defiant to the Last: Resistance at the Tule Lake Jail". This documentary reveals the history of the Tule Lake Segregation Center, where dissident Japanese Americans spoke out against forced removal and incarceration—and were punished.

 

After the screening will be a discussion between Director Emiko Omori and Producer Barbara Takei.

IN PERSON: One Book, One Coast with George Takei

Tune in for a discussion with George Takei about his graphic memoir, "They Called Us Enemy" [ https://sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com/v2/search?query=They%20Called%20Us%20Enemy&searchType=title ]! In this livestreamed discussion, Takei will talk about the experiences that led to the creation of his memoir, what it means to be a good neighbor in the face of overwhelming challenges, and how shared stories build stronger communities.

 

This author talk is for readers of all ages. Come discuss George Takei's "They Called Us Enemy" [ https://sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com/v2/search?query=They%20Called%20Us%20Enemy&searchType=title ]. In this graphic memoir, Takei describes his childhood experience of being incarcerated with his family in a prison camp during World War II. "They Called Us Enemy" is a "New York Times" bestseller and winner of numerous awards.

 

Read the book in advance of the discussion. Then come and share what you noticed, what you felt and, if relevant, your relationship to the history the memoir describes.

 

This discussion is for adults and will take place in the Library Program Room.

Our Personal Emergency Preparedness class can help you prepare for disasters. It will teach you about the various disasters you might face, what preparations you can make for them and how to prioritize.

 

This class is presented by Sunnyvale Emergency Response Volunteers (SERV), the volunteer arm of the Sunnyvale Office of Emergency Services.

Work on your knit or crocheted projects at the library with other yarn crafters in a relaxed social setting. Bring your own yarn, needles/hooks and ideas. Basic assistance and troubleshooting will be available. This is not a knitting or crocheting class; there will be no formal instruction.

Storm Drain
Sunnyvale Environmental Services: Adopt-a-Storm Drain!

The City of Sunnyvale's Environmental Services Department is excited to introduce new a community initiative to help keep local waterways clean and streets flood-free: the Adopt-a-Storm Drain Program [ https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/homes-streets-and-property/streets-and-trees/storm-drains/adopt-a-storm-drain ].

 

Sunnyvale's stormwater system plays a critical role in managing runoff from streets and neighborhoods. Unlike wastewater, stormwater in Sunnyvale is not treated or filtered before reaching local waterways. Debris-clogged storm drains can cause street flooding and introduce pollutants into the Bay. By keeping storm drains clear of debris, participants can make a direct impact on the community by preventing flooding and protecting local creeks and the Bay.

 

As part of the program, participants will have the opportunity to name their adopted drain and will be provided access to City-supplied tools and safety equipment, including a litter tool, rake, dustpan, bucket, gloves and a safety vest.

California State Trails: User Survey

Help Improve California's Trails! Trails are essential places for recreation, health, mobility and connection to nature. California is launching a statewide effort to improve access to recreational trails, like hiking, biking and horseback riding routes, especially for communities that have historically had less access to them.

 

This effort is part of a larger plan to make the outdoors more inclusive and accessible, support climate resilience, honor tribal priorities, and help meet California’s “30x30” goal (protecting 30% of land and coastal water by 2030).

OCF
Free Trees for Sunnyvale

Our City Forest [ https://www.ourcityforest.org/ ] has partnered with the VTA to provide free trees for residents in Sunnyvale [ https://www.ourcityforest.org/free-trees ]! This program includes free planting and delivery service. We aim to reduce urban heat and pollution by replacing trees removed during VTA’s recent construction project in Sunnyvale.

 

Our City Forest can also support large-scale plantings at schools, libraries, religious centers, parks and businesses with the help of community volunteers. Please contact us using the information below to coordinate these plantings.

 

Our team will match you with a tree that fits your space! Visit our Community Nursery at 1000 Spring St, San Jose, CA 95110. We are open Thursday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to Noon. Trees must be selected from the Approved Tree Species List for VTA-supported Programs.
