Community Celebrates Honorary Jerry Hill Street Unveiling at City Hall Nearly 100 community members gathered at San Mateo City Hall for the unveiling of the honorary Jerry Hill Street, celebrating Jerry Hill’s decades of public service and lasting contributions to San Mateo and the region. The ceremony featured tributes from Congressman Kevin Mullin, State Senator Josh Becker, San Mateo County Supervisors Ray Mueller and Lisa Gauthier, County Executive Mike Callagy, Mayor Adam Loraine and Deputy Mayor Nicole Fernandez. City Manager Alex Khojikian and the full San Mateo City Council joined community leaders in attendance to honor Hill and celebrate the occasion. City Clerk Martin McTaggart served as emcee. Speakers reflected on Hill’s long record of public service and his commitment to the San Mateo community before joining in the ceremonial unveiling of the new street sign. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this meaningful celebration possible! Save the Date for the 2026 Citywide Yard Sale Mark your calendars and let the decluttering begin! The City of San Mateo's Citywide Yard Sale event will return this summer on Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26. Host your own yard sale or partner with your neighbors for a community event to sell, swap or recycle items you no longer need! A citywide map of participating residences will help you find the best bargains near you. Sellers are welcome to participate on one or both days of the event. Find Out More About the Citywide Yard Sale City Services Academy Applications Due Aug. 5 We are now accepting applications for San Mateo's 2026 City Services Academy. The City Services Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that gives participants the opportunity to interact with City staff and learn about the challenges facing municipal government today. Participants will take part in case studies, site tours, class discussions and hands-on experiences. They will also have opportunities to meet with the City Manager, department directors and a member of City Council to learn about the City's day-to-day operations and how it implements new programs. City Services Academy is free to all participants. Participants must be 16 or older, live or work in the City of San Mateo, and have an interest in city government. Meetings will be held Wednesday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m., from Aug. 19 through Nov. 4 (excluding Sept. 30). Special Meeting 5:30 p.m. Closed Sessions Conference with Labor Negotiators Study Session High-Density Mixed-Use and Multi-Family Districts and Zoning Code Updates – Ordinance Introduction Regular Meeting, 7:00 p.m. Ceremonial • Parks & Recreation Appreciation Month - Proclamation • Disability Pride Month - Proclamation Public Hearing Appeal of a Planning Commission Approval of a New Six-Story Multifamily Residential Development - Adoption The City Council will hold a public hearing to consider an appeal of the Planning Commission’s approval of a multifamily residential development at 715/723 North San Mateo Drive. The project would replace two commercial buildings and a duplex with a six-story, 181-unit residential building, including 19 very-low-income units, 180 parking spaces, new sidewalks, landscaping and street trees. The Planning Commission approved the project after finding it consistent with applicable General Plan policies, zoning standards and objective requirements. Municipal Code Amendments – Ordinance Introduction This item has been rescheduled for a future meeting. New Business Nov. 3, 2026 Election – Consideration of Placing a ¼-Cent Transactions and Use (Sales) Tax Measure on the Ballot – Ordinance Introduction The City Council will consider placing a ¼-cent local sales tax measure on the November 2026 ballot to help address long-term budget challenges and support essential City services and infrastructure. If approved by voters, the measure would add 25 cents to every $100 in taxable purchases and generate an estimated $7 million annually for services such as street and park maintenance, public safety, emergency response, traffic improvements and community facilities. Groceries and prescription medications would not be taxed. The measure would require a simple majority of voters and include independent audits, public reporting and resident oversight. Public Hearing Nov. 3, 2026 Election – Placement of Charter Amendments on the Ballot The City Council will consider placing a measure on the November 2026 ballot to update the City Charter. The proposed amendments would reflect San Mateo’s current district-based election system, provide more flexibility in scheduling Council meetings, extend the time allowed to fill Council vacancies and remove or revise outdated provisions. The measure would also modernize language and requirements related to elections, selection of a newspaper for public notices, and emergency ordinances. Because the full text is lengthy, the City Clerk would post it on the City’s website and provide a copy upon request. A simple majority of voters would be required for approval. Chamber Closure: July 21-Aug. 14 Following the July 20 City Council Meeting, City Hall's Council Chamber will be closed for construction from July 21 through Aug. 14. During this time, the following meetings will be held at the San Mateo Main Public Library, Oak Room, located at 55 W. Third Ave. Planning Commission - July 28 Planning Commission - Aug. 11 Sustainability & Infrastructure Commission - Aug. 12 Meetings are expected to return to the Council Chamber after Aug. 14. Water Safety Reminders with City of San Mateo’s Harbor Patrol Hey San Mateo, plan on enjoying the water this summer? Harbor Patrol would like to share a few reminders for keeping our waterways safe for all users. Always operate your vessel at a safe and responsible speed and abide by the speed limits of each zone. Be aware of designated kayaking and paddleboarding areas. Kayakers and paddle boarders—avoid entering zone A. Idling and loitering in zone A is prohibited. Maintain at least 50 feet of distance from residential shorelines and private docks. Boating that creates large wakes is prohibited. Only one rider is permitted at a time for all towed water activities including tubing, wakeboarding and water skiing. If you plan on operating a vessel after sunset the speed is restricted to 10 miles per hour except in areas where lower speed limits are posted and required. Community Development Interim High-Density Mixed-Use and Multi-Family Districts, and Various Zoning Code Updates The City is currently undertaking a comprehensive update to Title 27 of the San Mateo Municipal Code to modernize zoning regulations, improve usability and ensure consistency with the General Plan and state law, with completion anticipated in early 2027. While that effort is ongoing, staff is proposing the creation of four new zoning districts (MU3, MU4, R6, and R7) to support timely implementation of the General Plan’s adopted land use designations by establishing clear and objective standards for permitted uses, development form and intensity. The proposed ordinance additionally includes several additional code amendments to ensure clarity within the code, correct existing inconsistencies and support general plan policies. City Council will review the proposed interim districts and proposed code updates at a public hearing on July 20, 2026.
