SVP Breaks Ground on Power the South Bay Project

Silicon Valley Power joined regional partners in Fremont to officially break ground on the Power the South Bay project, a major regional transmission infrastructure investment designed to strengthen grid reliability, expand access to cost-effective energy, and support Silicon Valley’s continued economic growth.

The project is part of the broader Powering the Bay initiative, a collaborative effort focused on modernizing and strengthening the Bay Area electric grid to meet increasing energy demand driven by innovation, advanced manufacturing, electrification, and emerging technologies. Collectively, the projects are expected to deliver approximately 1,000 megawatts of new transmission capacity while improving regional reliability, resiliency, and operational flexibility.

Power the South Bay is one of three major transmission projects that will interconnect at Silicon Valley Power’s Northern Receiving Station (NRS) Substation, helping meet the City of Santa Clara’s growing electricity demands for years to come. Silicon Valley Power also recognized the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) for its years of collaboration and planning that helped advance the project.

Mayor Lisa Gillmor delivered remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony and presented a commemorative certificate recognizing the milestone. The event was also attended by Councilmembers Suds Jain and Kevin Park, Electric Utility Director Nico Procos, and regional representatives from government, labor, utilities, and industry.

Photo of Councilmember and Staff in Washington D.C.

Silicon Valley Power (SVP) leadership, including Electric Utility Director Nico Procos, Chief Operating Officer Chris Karwick, Assistant Director Kathleen Hughes, Division Manager Basil Wong, and Councilmember Suds Jain, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to engage with key policymakers at the White House, Department of Energy, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission during the Northern California Power Agency/Northwestern Public Power Association annual federal policy conference.

During the conference, the SVP team highlighted the utility’s pioneering “AI flexibility” pilot program, which enables advanced data centers to dynamically adjust power consumption during periods of peak grid demand. The initiative demonstrates how public power utilities can support growing AI and data center energy needs while maintaining long-term grid reliability, resiliency, and affordability for customers.

Through innovative partnerships and forward-looking infrastructure planning, SVP continues to position Santa Clara as a national leader in reliable, sustainable, and technology-driven energy solutions.
