The candidate filing period to run for office in San Mateo County opens Monday, July 13, and closes Friday, August 7. Community members interested in running for City Council should contact the City Clerk’s Office to learn more and schedule an appointment to begin the process. Next City Council Meeting: July 20 The next City Council regular meeting will take place on Monday, July 20 at 7 p.m. City Council's Regular Meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, with exception of holidays and months of July, August and December when only one Council meeting is held. Police Department Real Talk San Mateo: Fireworks...Let's Talk About Them With the Fourth of July celebrations around the corner, it's important to remind the community that ALL fireworks, including Safe & Sane (yes, that includes sparklers), are illegal within our city limits. Join us for our next "Real Talk San Mateo" episode, which will focus on this important topic. City Council Member Nicole Fernandez and Deputy Fire Marshal Melinda Martin will discuss enforcement, safety and respect for our neighbors when it comes to illegal fireworks use. Enjoy Legal Fireworks at the City's 4th of July Celebration Join us in Redwood City on July 4 for a full day of Independence Day fun as we celebrate America 250, marking our nation's 250th anniversary. Check out the America 250 lineup, including fireworks hosted by the Port of Redwood City. Save the Date for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4 Join us on August 4 for National Night Out (NNO) as we come together to celebrate community, strengthen neighborhood connections and build positive police-community relationships. Every year, there are two ways to celebrate "America's Night Out Against Crime." Host Your Own Block Party You and your neighbors can host an event on your block that evening and invite the neighborhood and SMPD personnel to stop by. The true spirit of NNO lives within the neighborhoods, so we encourage you all to get together and plan events where you live. Something as simple as a BBQ or Ice Cream Social in your driveway is a great way to spend time meeting one another and talking about the safety of your area. Registration will open be open from July 1-24. The timing is optional but SMPD visits are scheduled between 6-9 p.m. The National Night Out Individual Block Event registration link will go live on July 1 and close July 24. Attend Our FREE Public Event Join SMPD for a free event on August 4 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 725 Monte Diablo Ave.! We'll have a K9 or two, SWAT Trucks, drones, resources, music, raffles and family fun. McGruff the Crime Dog will also be there, and many other wonderful tidbits that make this a safe night out with the family. We're also looking for sponsorships, donations, and/or vendors, who would work well with our safety resource fair vibe. Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the San Mateo Police Department? Why or how we do what we do? The San Mateo Community Police Academy offers residents an inside look at how your police department serves and works alongside the community to keep San Mateo safe. This free 10-week program combines classroom instruction and hands-on learning led by San Mateo police officers and local law enforcement professionals. Participants will explore topics including: Traffic Stops & DUI Enforcement Criminal Investigations & Prosecution SWAT & Dispatch Services Crime Prevention & Crime Scene Investigations Police K-9 & Crime Reduction Unit Youth Services & Community Engagement Firearms Range & High-Tech Force Options Simulator The 10-week academy runs weekly on Thursdays, 6:30-9 p.m. at the San Mateo Police Department from Sept. 17 - Nov. 19. Applicants must live or work in the City of San Mateo. Citizenship is not required, immigration status is not a factor. Participants will undergo a background investigation before acceptance due to access to restricted law enforcement areas and information. Submittal of an application does not guarantee acceptance. City Manager's Office Upcoming Community Meeting: City Update and Fiscal Outlook Join us at an upcoming community meeting with City Manager Alex Khojikian to learn about the City of San Mateo's priorities, fiscal outlook and consideration of a potential sales tax measure. June 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. with Mayor Adam Loraine (District 5) Location: Fire Station #27, 1801 De Anza Boulevard, San Mateo This meeting is open to the public. You'll hear from City Manager Alex Khojikian as he shares about the City's priorities to support a thriving, safe and resilient community now and into the future. He'll also share information about how the City of San Mateo is considering putting a ¼-cent local sales tax on the ballot in November 2026. If approved by voters, it could generate approximately $7 million in funding annually to support essential City services. Virtual Office Hours have been held every other Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m., with the last one scheduled for Wednesday, July 1. How to Participate Community members can register to receive the updated Teams link or visit the Horizon Treatment Services website. The biweekly virtual office hours offer an accessible opportunity for participants to learn about the proposed Horizon Recovery Center, ask questions and share feedback directly with Horizon representatives. County Board to Consider Location for Proposed Horizon Behavioral Health Facility July 2 The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider the final location for Horizon Treatment Services’ proposed behavioral health facility at its meeting on Thursday, July 2, at 9 a.m. The facility is being considered for either San Mateo or Burlingame. The City of San Mateo encourages community members who are interested in this topic to review the County’s meeting materials and share their input directly with the Board of Supervisors. The meeting will be held at the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors Chambers, 500 County Center, Redwood City. Meeting details, including the agenda and information about how to participate or provide public comment, are available on the County’s Board of Supervisors website. The proposed facility is a County-led item. The City will continue to monitor the discussion and share updates with the community as more information becomes available. Central Park Playground Project - Construction Staging Area Expansion Starting mid July 2026, the construction staging area fencing will be expanded to include the lawn area next to the Fallen Heroes Memorial. This area will be closed to restore the central lawn, including repairs to the irrigation system, sod laying and a critical 45-day establishment period to allow the new sod to establish a proper root system. For everyone’s safety, please use caution while in the area, stay focused and abide by all posted signage. Follow more updates on the Central Park Playground Renovation Project webpage. Public Works Dredging Underway at Marina Lagoon The City Council awarded a contract to MidCal Dredging Inc. for the Marina Lagoon Spot Dredging project on May 11, 2026. The project will remove a cumulative volume of 2,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment from Marina Lagoon to restore hydraulic connectivity at two key inlet locations. Dredging locations include the intersections of Marina Lagoon and Leslie Creek, near Joinville Park, as well as Borel Creek, near the State Route 92 overpass. While recreational use of the lagoon will continue during construction, the work will require temporary navigation restrictions between July 2026 and October 2026 to ensure public and worker safety. Materials and equipment will be staged in a small triangular area adjacent to J Hart Clinton Drive and Anchor Road during construction.
