Fremont Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training [ https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/fire/safety-preparedness/cert ]
Learn Skills to Help Your Neighbors in a Disaster

Get Prepared and Get Involved! The Fremont Fire Department is offering three Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training academies in 2026.

CERT is a free, 20-hour training program for Fremont residents who are at least 18 years old. Learn how to prepare for and prevent emergencies at home, while developing hands-on disaster skills to help others. In a major disaster, such as an earthquake, CERT Volunteers organize into neighborhood-based teams and use their life-saving skills to help their neighbors and community.

Trainings begin in late January, March, and May. To register, or for more information, visit the Fire Department’s *CERT page [ https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/fire/safety-preparedness/cert ]* or contact (510) 494-4244 or *CERT@fremont.gov.*

Dog Park [ https://bit.ly/DogParkTurf? ]
Synthetic Turf Replacement at Central Park Small Dog Park

The Central Park Small Dog Park will be closed January 20, 2026 for a synthetic turf replacement project. The small dog park is estimated to reopen early February 2026. The project includes removing the current turf, preparing the ground to improve drainage, and installing new turf. These upgrades will enhance safety, comfort, and play conditions for our community’s dogs. The large dog park has re-opened.

Thank you for your patience during construction. For more information, contact Park Planning & Design by email *elee@fremont.gov* or call 510-494-4776.

Plastic Bags
New Law, New Habits: Navigating New Plastic Bag Law

California is phasing out plastic carryout bags with its new law, Senate Bill 1053. Most stores are no longer allowed to provide plastic carryout bags at checkout—including the thicker plastic bags previously permitted. This law helps reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment.

While moving away from plastic is a great start, we encourage Fremont residents to bring their own reusable bags when shopping. You can reuse the bags you've been given or bring your own favorites. Reusing what you already have is a simple way to reduce waste in our community and help promote a climate-ready Fremont.

New year, new habits—make the switch to reusable bags today!

Reminder: If you still have plastic bags at home, please remember that they do not belong in your blue recycling cart. To ensure proper processing and avoid equipment issues at recycling facilities, all plastic bags should be placed in your black garbage cart.
