The City Services Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience that gives participants the opportunity to interact with City staff and learn about the challenges facing municipal government today. Participants will take part in case studies, site tours, class discussions, and hands-on experiences. They will also have opportunities to meet with the City Manager, Community Development Director, Police Chief, Public Works Director, City Librarian, Parks and Recreation Director, and a member of our City Council to learn about the City day-to-day operations, and how it implements new programs. City Services Academy is free to all participants. Participants must be sixteen or older, live or work in the City of San Mateo, and have an interest in City government. Meetings will be held Wednesday evenings, 6-9 p.m. from August 20 through Nov. 12 (excluding Sept. 24 and Oct. 1). The Academy will be held at different locations throughout the course of the program. To receive an application by mail/email, or for more information, please contact Laurie Strange at 650-522-7019 or lstrange@cityofsanmateo.org. Applications are due by August 6, 2025. Class size is limited, so apply now! Once we are at capacity, we will no longer accept applications for the 2025 City Services Academy. Those not selected for the current Academy will be considered for subsequent academies. Apply Here Police Department Real Talk San Mateo: Electric Rideables & the Law Real Talk San Mateo: Electric Rideables & the Law on Tuesday, July 22 is your must-attend session if you ride or plan to ride an e-bike, scooter, moped, or electric board! During the event, which takes place at the San Mateo Police Department or online on Zoom, we'll break down exactly what’s legal (and what’s not), how to tell if your ride is street legal, and what could get you cited or even impounded. From age limits and helmet laws to bike lane access and licensing, this session clears up the confusion and gives you the knowledge to ride safely and legally. Whether you're a rider, a parent, or just trying to stay informed, this is critical info you won't want to miss. Did you know that there are so many new rules affecting the use of E-bikes? You may be wondering if it's street legal, what the age requirement is, if you need a license -- it can be quite confusing. We aim to educate our community, both riders, and parents who purchase these "bikes" for their kids so it can be a safe and fun experience. If you'd like to attend in person, then you must register for a free ticket via the Eventbrite link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/real-talk-san-mateo-lets-talk-about-e-bikes-and-the-rules-of-the-road-tickets-1434996135069?aff=oddtdtcreator. National Night Out is Tuesday, August 5 - How Will You Celebrate? It's that time of year again! National Night Out is just a month away. How will you spend it? Will you be joining us for our free public event at the King Center? Or will you be hosting or attending a block event on your street? Either way, we'll have staff and resources available to ensure that together, we celebrate America's Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 5. 🚨BLOCK EVENTS If you plan on hosting an event on your street for you and your neighbors, you can register it here. By registering your event, we'll add you to our list of blocks visits to ensure you get a brief visit by a SMPD representative to talk to you and your neighbors about whatever you wish to discuss. These block events usually consist of block parties, ice cream socials in a driveway, backyard barbecues, or whatever you and your neighbors want to come up with to strengthen our police-community relationships. Block events should be designated for a time between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Officers will be assigned numerous events to visit during this time frame. We will be able to provide safety resource information to registrants to share with attendees. Registration is currently open but closes on July 28. If you do not have a block event on your street, feel free to join us at the King Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m. 🚨FREE PUBLIC EVENT The King Center event is a free public event where you can visit with our officers, check out public safety vehicles, obtain resource information, sign your kids up for San Mateo PAL, visit with McGruff the Crime Dog, enjoy some music, and possibly win a raffle prize. Thrive San Mateo: Resources for Living Well Cool Tips for Hot Days Summer is here—and while it’s the perfect season for enjoying the outdoors, it’s also a time to protect yourself from the sun and heat. July is UV Safety Month, making it a great reminder to take a few simple steps before heading outside: 🧴 Cover Up & Protect Your Skin – Wear lightweight long sleeves, apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), and don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from UV rays. 💧 Hydrate Often – Carry a reusable water bottle and sip regularly, even if you’re not feeling thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty you're already dehydrated, which can lead to fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and even fainting or heatstroke in severe situations. 🌡️ Beat the Heat – If temperatures climb, take breaks in cool spaces. Our San Mateo libraries and community centers are welcoming spots to relax, read, or enjoy free programs—all in air-conditioned comfort. Make a splash in our community pools, or head downtown to catch a movie for a cool escape. 🎶 Enjoy Summer Nights – A great way to cool off in the evening is the Central Park Music Series, with free live music every Thursday through August 14. Bring a blanket, some friends, and let the music set the tone for a perfect summer evening. Whether you’re hiking at Coyote Point, at Central Park, or just strolling through downtown or your neighborhood, these small steps can keep your summer safe and fun.
