Pruneridge Complete Streets Moving Forward
Photo of Pruneridge Avenue

After years of planning, the Pruneridge Avenue Complete Streets project is finally moving toward implementation with newly secured funding, including support from Congressman Ro Khanna. I am grateful for his partnership and advocacy in helping bring federal resources back to our community to support critical safety and infrastructure improvements. Council previously approved a hybrid design for Pruneridge that reflects both community input and real-world constraints. Rather than taking an all-or-nothing approach, this version focuses on improving safety while maintaining traffic flow along one of our busiest east–west connections. The plan includes new bike lanes, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and targeted roadway adjustments to improve visibility and reduce conflict points.

This project also highlights an ongoing challenge we need to confront honestly. While there were opportunities for community input throughout the planning process, participation in these efforts is often limited, and many residents are not aware of projects until they are already well underway. That gap matters. When the funding was recently secured and publicized, it was not just met with joy, but with the frustration of residents feeling unincluded and unaware. If we want plans that truly reflect our community, we need to do a better job making engagement accessible, visible, and worth people’s time. At the same time, implementation is not the end of the conversation. If elements of this design are not working as intended, we need to be willing to evaluate, adjust, and respond. Good governance is not about getting it perfect the first time. It is about staying responsive and accountable over time.

Flock Talk

Image of a Flock

This month, Council took up the use of Flock cameras as part of our public safety strategy. I supported moving forward with this tool, with the understanding that technology must always be paired with clear policy, oversight, and accountability. Public safety decisions are rarely simple, but they are always consequential.

I also want to acknowledge that this is an area where I differ from some of the advocacy partners I work closely with. That does not diminish the respect I have for them or the shared work we continue to do for our community. Disagreement, when handled with integrity, can still move us forward. More broadly, moments like this are a reminder of the responsibility we carry on the dais. How we conduct ourselves matters. How we treat one another and our staff matters. I remain committed to elevating the tone of our work, maintaining professionalism, and ensuring that even in disagreement, we lead with clarity and respect for the public we serve.

San Tomas Aquino Trail

San Tomas Aquino Trail

I often head out to walk along the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail at dusk. Clearing my head after a Tuesday or catching up on a podcast has become one of my most necessary practices.

It is one of the things I appreciate most about Santa Clara. Families out walking, the shift in light over the water near Great America, and the pink sky reflecting against the glass of NVIDIA in a way that blends sky and earth, tech and nature. Spaces like this are easy to overlook when we are focused on larger issues, but they are part of what makes Santa Clara feel livable and grounded. They offer a place to reset, reflect, and reconnect, not just with the environment, but with the community itself.

These moments matter. They remind us that the work we do is not only about infrastructure and policy, but about preserving the everyday experiences that make a city feel like home. We also have community groups working to expand trail access across the city, which is an important part of continuing to build on assets like this. Great Eats in D6 – Bloom

Photo from Bloom in Santa Clara

I had the chance to stop by Bloom for breakfast and couldn’t help but think of Yogi Berra: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.” Bloom is one of those places that quietly became a Santa Clara staple before we even realized it. Great food, thoughtful space, and a strong sense of identity rooted right here in our community. It is exciting to see that they are expanding into downtown San Jose. Growth like that is something we should be proud of. It reflects the strength of our local business community and the environment we are continuing to build.

At the same time, there is something important about remembering where that growth begins. Santa Clara has been home to so many businesses at their start, and continuing to support them as they grow is part of sustaining that cycle for the next wave of entrepreneurs. A Day at the Stadium

Photo of Celebrate Santa Clara: A Day on the Field

The last day of February included a full day at the stadium celebrating Santa Clara, and it was a reminder of what these spaces can and should be for our residents. Beyond contracts and financial discussions, this is a city asset with the potential to bring people together in meaningful ways. Events like this shift the experience from something that feels distant or transactional to something that feels shared and accessible. It reflects a different kind of value, one rooted in participation and community presence.

There is still work to do to ensure that our major assets consistently deliver for residents, but days like this show what is possible when that alignment begins to take shape.

________________________________________________________________________

This month reflects the balance of what it means to serve Santa Clara. We are advancing long-planned infrastructure like Pruneridge, making thoughtful but sometimes difficult decisions around public safety tools, and continuing to evaluate how our city assets serve our residents. At the same time, we are reminded that the strength of our community is found in everyday spaces, local businesses, and the moments that connect us to one another.

There is also a clear call to do better. Whether it is increasing participation in city decisions or ensuring that our processes are transparent and accessible, we have work ahead. Good governance is not just about the decisions we make, but about how we make them and who is part of that process.

Thank you for continuing to stay engaged, ask questions, and be part of shaping Santa Clara. This city works best when we show up for it, and for each other.

With Gratitude and Grit,

Kelly
