*TWO-ALARM RESIDENTIAL FIRE*

*Sunnyvale, CA *— On Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, at approximately 10:43 a.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) received reports of a structure fire at an eight-unit apartment complex located at 1642 Kirkland Drive.

Officers arrived on scene at approximately 10:47 a.m. and observed heavy flames and smoke coming from the northeast corner of the complex. Fire crews initiated an aggressive fire attack and requested a second alarm at approximately 10:50 a.m. to obtain additional resources. The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:44 a.m.

Preliminary information indicates that three of the eight units sustained significant fire and smoke damage, and the building as a whole was damaged.

There were no reported civilian or officer injuries. Twenty-four residents were displaced because of the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We thank the Mountain View and Santa Clara Fire Departments for their assistance in backfilling Sunnyvale personnel during the incident.
