Unearth your story... through comics! Join us for an introductory class on autobiographical comics. We'll go over different styles and creative processes that artists can use to tell their story, followed by an easy activity where you will draft your own one-page comic. All skill levels welcome!

ONLINE: Unearth a Story: Dinosaurs, Climate Change, and Resilience: Author Talk with Evan Jevnikar

What if dinosaurs could help us prepare for the future? In "Surviving Climate and Chaos", paleontologist Evan Jevnikar reveals how the prehistoric past holds critical lessons for understanding modern climate change, extinction, and survival

 

Join us for this online discussion as we'll discuss how ancient ecosystems reveal patterns in today’s climate change, what dinosaur fossils teach us about survival and extinction, further learning to apply lessons from prehistory to modern environmental challenges.

Zectangle
IN PERSON: Unearth Your Artist: Introduction to Zentangle Workshop

*Saturday, June 27, 2 to 4 p.m.*

Join Zentangle instructor Abby O'Connell for an introduction to meditative drawing. Described as yoga for the brain, the Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Zentangle embraces a "no mistakes" philosophy and encourages participants with no art experience to try.

 

This program is for adults only. It will take place in the Library Program Room. Registration is not required but supplies are first come, first served.

Pollinator Week
IN PERSON: Pollinator Week BioBlitz at Charles Street Garden

*Sunday, June 28, 1 to 2:30 p.m.*

Join Sunnyvale Public Library staff and Charles Street Garden volunteers to learn about Citizen Science and help count pollinators for the Pollinator Week BioBlitz using the iNaturalist app.

 

Pollinator Week is an annual event celebrated internationally in support of pollinator health. This community science project is hosted by the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign's (NAPPC) Pollinator Communications Taskforce. Join this project to help collect data on the distribution of pollinators across the US, Canada and Mexico during pollinator week (June 22 to 28).

 

Participants for this event must bring their own phone or internet-enabled tablet with the iNaturalist app installed. Storm Drain
Sunnyvale Environmental Services: Adopt-a-Storm Drain!

The City of Sunnyvale's Environmental Services Department is excited to introduce new a community initiative to help keep local waterways clean and streets flood-free: the Adopt-a-Storm Drain Program [ https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/homes-streets-and-property/streets-and-trees/storm-drains/adopt-a-storm-drain ].

 

Sunnyvale's stormwater system plays a critical role in managing runoff from streets and neighborhoods. Unlike wastewater, stormwater in Sunnyvale is not treated or filtered before reaching local waterways. Debris-clogged storm drains can cause street flooding and introduce pollutants into the Bay. By keeping storm drains clear of debris, participants can make a direct impact on the community by preventing flooding and protecting local creeks and the Bay.

 

As part of the program, participants will have the opportunity to name their adopted drain and will be provided access to City-supplied tools and safety equipment, including a litter tool, rake, dustpan, bucket, gloves and a safety vest.

Free Trees for Sunnyvale

Our City Forest [ https://www.ourcityforest.org/ ] has partnered with the VTA to provide free trees for residents in Sunnyvale [ https://www.ourcityforest.org/free-trees ]! This program includes free planting and delivery service. We aim to reduce urban heat and pollution by replacing trees removed during VTA’s recent construction project in Sunnyvale.

 

Our City Forest can also support large-scale plantings at schools, libraries, religious centers, parks and businesses with the help of community volunteers. Please contact us using the information below to coordinate these plantings.

 

Our team will match you with a tree that fits your space! Visit our Community Nursery at 1000 Spring St, San Jose, CA 95110. We are open Thursday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to Noon. Trees must be selected from the Approved Tree Species List for VTA-supported Programs.
