It’s Summer Santa Clara! Let’s get together!

Cities are often defined by skylines, stadiums, and statistics. But what truly defines a community are the places where people gather. Around a dinner table. In a classroom. At a neighborhood restaurant. In a council chamber. At a concert in the park.

This summer, as visitors from around the world arrive for FIFA World Cup activities, I've (again) found myself reflecting on the gathering places that make Santa Clara special. The places where friendships are built, ideas are debated, cultures are celebrated, and community takes shape.

This month's highlights are a reminder that while Santa Clara may be known for innovation, our greatest strength has always been our people and the places that bring us together.

Asia Live Opens Its Doors

This month, I had the honor of helping welcome Asia Live to Valley Fair alongside regional leaders, business owners, and community members from across the Bay Area. Asia Live is more than a new dining destination. It is a new gathering place, where food becomes an invitation to learn about cultures, share stories, and build community.

During my remarks, I spoke about how Santa Clara has become a place where cultures, traditions, and innovation meet. While our city is known around the world for technology, what truly defines us is the diversity of people who call this community home.

Asia Live is not simply a collection of (fantastic) restaurants. It is a celebration of the cultures, histories, and traditions that have helped shape Silicon Valley. The menus are extensive, and the space is gorgeous. I highly recommend strolling through and having a bite or two!

I closed with a blessing that felt especially fitting for the occasion:

""So tonight, let us wish for abundance in the kitchen, joy in the dining room, prosperity for those who work here, and friendship among all who gather here. May this place never simply serve meals. May it always serve connection.""

Future Councilmembers at Bowers Elementary

Mayor Gillmor and I spent a morning at Bowers Elementary for Career Day, where we hosted what may have been the most spirited City Council meeting of the year. The classroom became a gathering place for civic debate, proving that community engagement can start at any age.

Rather than simply explaining local government, students stepped into the role of councilmembers and tackled a real community question:" Should Santa Clara build a dog park or a soccer park?"

The debate was thoughtful, passionate, and surprisingly familiar. Students spoke about community needs, competing priorities, and how public spaces serve different kids in different ways. They debated if dog poop or dirty cleats were grosser. There may have been some pushy persuasion. It was real. And, like I’ve seen in council, when the votes started coming in, the class could hardly contain their disappointment or joy. So is life.

While the vote may not have settled a real issue, it was a reminder that civic engagement starts early. Watching third graders thoughtfully debate public policy gave me a lot of confidence in the next generation of Santa Clarans.

Regional Collaboration Matters

On June 11, I joined elected officials from across Santa Clara County at the annual Summer meeting of the Cities Association of Santa Clara County.

This gathering reinforced an important singular lesson: when a crisis occurs, communities rely on the trust, communication, and relationships built long before the emergency begins. Strong partnerships between cities help ensure we can respond effectively when residents need us most. We were fortunate to have a talented and experienced group of panelists, including County Undersheriff Michael Doty, County Fire Chief Suwanna Kerdkaew, Ray Riordan, Director of Emergency Management at the City of San José, and Town Manager of Los Gatos, Chris Constantin.

One simple step every resident can take today is signing up for Santa Clara County's emergency notification system, AlertSCC, which provides critical emergency updates by text, email, or phone. Thanks to President Tina Walia and the CASCC executive board for their work on this event.

Preparedness starts before the emergency, not during it.

PAL Annual Fishing Trip

The annual Police Activities League fishing trip returned this month, giving local youth the opportunity to spend a day outdoors learning new skills and building relationships with mentors and officers.

Programs like PAL remind us that community is built one relationship at a time. They create opportunities for young people to build confidence, friendships, and trust with the officers who serve our community. For some kids, a positive relationship with a police officer can change perspectives, break down barriers, and open doors that might not otherwise exist. Those relationships matter, and they can have a lasting impact long after the trip is over.

My thanks to the volunteers, parents and guardians who entrust their children to these experiences, and the organizers who continue investing in Santa Clara's youth. A special thank you to Officer Machado for leading this year's fishing trip and carrying forward this important tradition. I hear the fish weren't particularly cooperative this year, but that doesn't mean anyone came home empty-handed. The greatest catch may have been the conversations, friendships, and trust built along the shoreline.

District 6 Eats: Must Be Thai

If you've driven down Stevens Creek Boulevard in the evening, you've probably noticed the crowd gathered outside Must Be Thai. [ https://www.mustbethai.com/ ]

There is a reason for that.

This local favorite has built a loyal following around dishes like Khao Soi, Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, Tom Yum Fried Rice, and Pad Kra Pao. The restaurant consistently draws families, friends, and food lovers from across the South Bay, creating the kind of vibrant neighborhood atmosphere every city hopes to have.

The food is outstanding, but what I love most is seeing a locally owned business so clearly embraced by the community. Every city needs places where neighbors naturally gather. Judging by the crowds each evening, Must Be Thai has become one of them.

The World Is Coming to Santa Clara

The headlines may call it the "San Francisco Bay Area World Cup," but we know where the matches are being played.

Right here in Santa Clara.

For a few weeks, Santa Clara becomes one of the world's great gathering places, welcoming visitors from every corner of the globe. They'll stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, visit our businesses, and experience the community we've built together.

For decades, Santa Clara has been the city behind the screen. We power much of the technology the world depends on, yet our larger neighbors often overshadow our name. The World Cup gives us a rare opportunity to step into the spotlight and tell our own story: A story of innovation, diversity, small businesses, great neighborhoods, and a community that consistently punches above its weight. Long after the final whistle, what visitors remember most won't be a scoreboard. It will be the people and places that welcomed them.

The broadcasts may say "Bay Area." The banners may say "San Francisco." But for those of us who live here, we know the world is coming to Santa Clara. And we're ready to welcome it.

The spotlight of the World Cup will eventually move on. What will remain are the people, neighborhoods, businesses, and gathering places that have always made Santa Clara special.
