Kiku Crossing is the result of a partnership between MidPen Housing, a nonprofit developer, and the City of San Mateo and County of San Mateo. Kiku Crossing represented a rare opportunity to transform City-owned property into something that would deliver multiple benefits to the community. In addition to the land, the City contributed $12.5 million towards construction, and those funds helped unlock additional financing from the state. The studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments are for individuals and families earning 30 percent to 80 percent of the Area Median Income. This represents a salary range of $41,150 to $109,700, and for a family of four, it's $58,750 to $156,650. Kiku is now home to residents who have experienced homelessness, people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, families with low incomes and eligible public-sector workers. San Mateo Flashback & Contribute to Our Time Capsule Did you know? For several years at the turn of the century, San Mateo was known as the “Floral City”. A 1916 publication said that the city received the name because of its “wonderful growth of flowers and shrubbery”. During that period, the moniker was used as a marketing tool to encourage more development. The image below is from a 1908 pamphlet prepared by the San Mateo Board of Trade, an early local organization that functioned as a Chamber of Commerce and features the Peninsula Hotel, the former residence of San Mateo businessman Alvinza Hayward. The Peninsula Hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1920. San Mateo Board of Trade. Promotion Committee. (1908-1909). San Mateo, California: the floral city. Learn More City Clerk's Office Honoring Our Adopted Battalion Earlier this month, Councilmember Danielle Cwirko‑Godycki and City Clerk Martin McTaggart traveled to Fort Campbell, Kentucky to represent the City of San Mateo at the Bastogne Ball, a celebration of the U.S. Army’s legendary 101st Airborne Division. This year’s event held special significance as it commemorated the 60th anniversary of the division’s deployment to Vietnam, honoring the service and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought there. Honoring Our Adopted Battalion San Mateo proudly maintains a longstanding relationship with the 101st Airborne Division through our adoption of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment. This partnership, rooted in civic-military goodwill, reinforces the City’s commitment to recognizing the sacrifices of our servicemembers and building meaningful ties between communities and the armed forces. Highlights of the Visit Cwirko‑Godycki and McTaggart joined military dignitaries, veterans, and family members at the Bastogne Ball for an evening of remembrance and reflection, paying tribute to the legacy of the 101st in Vietnam and beyond. The visit also included a tour of Fort Campbell, where the San Mateo officials: Met with leadership of the 1-327th Infantry Regiment. Toured key facilities and historical sites on base, including a monument the City contributed towards building. Engaged with soldiers to express San Mateo’s appreciation and continued support. A Tribute Close to Home Residents can experience this powerful connection firsthand at the San Mateo Main Library, where a permanent display honors the 101st Airborne and the City’s adopted unit. The exhibit includes: Historic photos, commendations, and the unit’s insignia. Background on the regiment’s role in past conflicts, including Vietnam and recent deployments. Learn More SMPD Reminds Everyone Fireworks are Illegal in San Mateo SMPD reminds our community that ALL fireworks, even “Safe & Sane” fireworks, are illegal within San Mateo’s city limits. Fireworks will be confiscated, and citations will be issued to violators. Parents are also liable for any damage or injuries caused by children using fireworks. The few minutes of entertainment is not worth the hefty $1,000 citation, and/or jailtime, or the lasting damage/injury they may cause. Fireworks pose an extreme fire risk, and our State continues to face an exceptionally high fire danger, in addition to a drought. Just one spark from a firework could set off an enormous blaze, taxing the already limited resources we have. The sound of fireworks can be exceedingly disruptive to our neighbors including children, the elderly, veterans, those with PTSD, and pets. Let’s respect our environment and our neighbors. Reporting Illegal Fireworks: July 4 tends to be an extremely busy night for law enforcement and reports of illegal fireworks have already begun. Reporting instances with limited information makes it difficult to determine a location, so call us only if you can provide specifics. Please use our non-emergency Dispatch number at (650) 522-7700 to report fireworks and not 9-1-1 unless an emergency is involved. To be enforceable, an officer must witness the violation. Our department will be conducting high-visibility patrols and enforcement throughout the city and respond to complaints. Officers will take appropriate enforcement action. We have also added a reporting form on our website to better track these types of complaints. Feel free to submit that form if you have specific information to share with us. The form can be found below. Make a Report Here Library Updates Super You! Interactive Circus with Drea Ives! Thrive San Mateo: Resources for Living Well Planning Today for Peace of Mind Tomorrow: 5 Ways to Protect Your Future June 28 is Insurance Awareness Day, and while it won’t top anyone’s summer bucket list, it’s a useful reminder: the less we avoid the practical stuff—like coverage, retirement planning, and emergency prep—the more bandwidth we free up for everything else. This week, Thrive San Mateo invites you to use that energy wisely. Take one step that helps you feel steady, supported, and better equipped for whatever life brings next. Here are five ways you can do that starting today: 1) 🔐 Review Your Insurance (Without the Overwhelm) Whether it’s health, renters, auto, or pet insurance—understanding what you’re covered for brings peace of mind. Use this as a once-a-year checkpoint to contact your provider, ask questions, or compare options. 2) 🏠 Know What Your Home Really Covers Fire? Earthquake? Theft? Some protections require add-ons. Now’s a great time to revisit your homeowners or renters policy and spot any gaps before they matter. 3) 📂 Start a “What If” Folder This can be digital or physical. Include your insurance details, key contacts, medical info, and a simple checklist of what your family should know in an emergency. Bonus: Label it something empowering like “Peace of Mind Kit.” Get family emergency communications tips here. 4) 📅 Plan One Financial Future Move - FREE Workshop on July 17 You don’t have to overhaul everything—just take one step. Community News & Events 101/92 Short-Term Area Improvements Project Update Relief is on the way for drivers who use the 101 and 92 interchange in San Mateo & Foster City Construction began this April on the 101/92 Short-Term Area Improvements Project to improve safety and ease traffic near the US 101/SR 92 interchange. The work includes redesigned ramps, improved merging areas, and clearer lane markings – all within existing Caltrans property. These upgrades will reduce sudden lane changes, lessen crashes, and improve access to local roads. Led by Caltrans, the TA, and C/CAG, construction runs through summer 2028. To minimize disruptions, much of the work will occur overnight. For more details on the Short-Term Area Improvements Project, visit the project webpage: www.smcta.com/101-92ai.
