City Completes Emergency Management Training for 40 Staff With Support From Measure K Grant The City of San Mateo has just wrapped up a four-day Emergency Management Concepts Training for 40 staff members, held Dec. 8–11 at the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department's Administration Office. The course, led by Cal OES instructors, strengthened the City's ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies and disasters. This year’s training was made possible through a Measure K grant of approximately $50,000 from County Supervisor Noelia Corzo, which covered the full cost of bringing state-certified trainers directly to San Mateo. Hosting the training for the course, which normally takes place in San Luis Obispo, allowed the City to save on travel, increase participation, and build stronger interdepartmental coordination. “Ensuring that our team understands emergency management concepts is critical to how we serve the public during disasters,” said the City Manager Alex Khojikian. “This training builds our internal capacity so we can respond quickly, effectively, and collaboratively when our community needs us most.” To learn more about SMC Fire's Office of Emergency Services, go to www.smcfire.org/office-of-emergency-services-oes. City Launches Climate Adaptation Plan for Sea Level Rise The City of San Mateo has begun developing its Climate Adaptation Plan for Sea Level Rise, a multi-year effort funded by a Caltrans Sustainable Planning Grant. The plan will help the City understand shoreline vulnerabilities and identify long-term strategies to reduce coastal and flood risks. San Mateo is among the first cities in the Bay Area to begin planning under new regional guidelines adopted by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC). Sea level rise poses significant risks locally, with projections of 1.1–2.7 feet by 2050 and up to 10.2 feet by 2100. The plan builds on major City investments—including the wastewater treatment plant modernization and the Stormwater Master Plan update—and will include technical studies, adaptation strategies, and ongoing community engagement. Thrive San Mateo: Thrive San Mateo: Staying Connected as the Days Get Shorter December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month, a gentle reminder that this time of year can feel heavier for many of us — and that a little extra connection and care goes a long way in helping our community thrive. With shortened daylight and the busy holiday season, it’s normal for energy and mood to shift. Many people experience seasonal depression or milder seasonal “slumps” without even realizing it. This month is an opportunity to acknowledge those feelings, support one another, and make small choices that help us stay grounded. Simple ways to support yourself and others this season: Catch sunlight when you can. Even brief morning light or a walk at lunch can make a noticeable difference. Keep up small social rituals. A quick coffee, a check-in text, or a short visit helps maintain connection. Notice changes in those around you. If someone seems more withdrawn than usual, a warm outreach can matter more than you think. Reach out for support when needed. Talking with a healthcare provider or mental health professional is a positive, proactive step. Looking out for our community Seasonal depression can make people feel isolated or disconnected. Staying attentive and compassionate helps ensure neighbors, youth, and older adults aren’t navigating tough moments alone. If you ever come across a situation that feels unsafe or concerning, trust your instincts and reach out to local support services. Local mental health resources: If you or someone you know needs support this season, San Mateo County offers several reliable options: StarVista Crisis Center (24/7): Call or text 650-579-0350, or dial 988 for immediate support. https://sanmateocrisis.org/crisishotline San Mateo County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services (BHRS) – ACCESS Call Center: For mental-health or substance-use information, assessments, and referrals call 1-800-686-0101. https://www.smchealth.org/contact-info-pod/access-call-center Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT): Provides in-person crisis support, available 24/7.
