Irrigate Smart This Summer

Did you know that nearly half of the water we use outdoors is wasted? Inefficient watering methods and irrigation systems are often to blame. This summer be water-smart, save time, and promote a healthier landscape with these tips.

1. Timing is everything

Know how much water your landscape needs before you set your sprinkler. Use the Valley Water Irrigation Scheduler [ https://www.valleywaterscheduler.com/ ] to create monthly watering schedules customized to your landscape and controller.

2. Look for the label

WaterSense®-labeled irrigation controllers use local weather data to water only when needed. If your system uses a clock timer, consider upgrading to this smart technology. Rebates are available for irrigation equipment upgrades. 3.Go with a pro

Walk Bike Roll California: Powered by Student Leadership

Perennial and Chloe are co-leads of the Walk Bike Roll California (WBRCal) student working group.  They work alongside their advisor Tim Oey. WBRCal aims to integrate biking, walking and rolling education into schools all over California. These changes will most likely be implemented in elementary, middle, and high school PE curriculums. They involve experience on real bikes, not just learning through videos and lectures! Through these classes students will learn the basic skills to walk, bike and roll safely. This is important because this allows students to choose more active modes of transportation now and in the future. In order to implement these changes WBRCal needs many supporters! Is it Time to Wash your Car? Help Protect our Bay While you Do It!

Washing your car at home might seem like a simple choice, but did you know it could be harming our local creeks and the Bay?

When you wash your car at home, the dirty water rinsed from your car is filled with soap, oil, grease and chemicals. As the water runs down the driveway it can also carry other pollutants like motor oil, brake dust, and tiny bits of metal from your car. From there, it flows into storm drains—the metal grates you see along streets and gutters. These drains lead straight to local creeks and the Bay without being cleaned first. This runoff is stormwater pollution, and it can carry harmful substances into the water that plants, fish, and other animals need to survive.

Choose a better option—go to a commercial car wash. Commercial car washes are an easier and a safer choice. They collect and treat dirty water, filtering out pollutants before safely reusing or disposing of it. This helps keep pollutants out of the Bay and helps to conserve this valuable resource.

*To Rinse or Not To Rinse – That is the Question *

Recycling can be confusing, especially since every city collects and processes waste differently. But proper sorting can prevent tons (literally!) of material from going to the landfill. Let’s clear up some common myths so you can Recycle Right as a Sunnyvale resident.  


* *Rinsing Recyclables:* Is rinsing worth the water? Yes! – a quick rinse to remove food from glass, plastic and metal containers prevents contamination. That small amount of water is far less wasteful than the water, fuel and resources needed to create new items or haul contaminated loads to the landfill. After being sorted at the SMaRT Station, recyclables go to processing facilities where any remaining residue is removed.  
* *Crushing Cans: *Optical sorters at the SMaRT Station separate items by shape, so crushing containers may actually hurt the recycling process. Flattened recyclables can be mistaken for paper and end up mis-sorted – or missed altogether. Keep your cans and bottles whole! 
* *When in doubt, toss it out! *Instead of ‘wishcycling’ (hoping questionable items get recycled), it’s often better to throw away. Wishcycling can waste time, energy and money by sending trash through the entire sorting process. That trash ends up in the landfill anyway, and may contaminate clean recyclables along the way.
