Summer Reading Begins

Summer Reading starts today! Register [ https://mountainview.beanstack.com/reader365 ] the whole family for Summer Reading now through July 31 to read, discover, and earn rewards. All ages are welcome to participate. This year’s theme, “Plant A Seed, Read,” will give us space to think about how reading can nourish our minds and encourage us to build connections with others in our community. 

Scratcher cards will be available at the Library throughout Summer Reading. Adults, teens, and children will receive separate cards. Children and teens may scratch off one mark on their cards for each day they read, with no restrictions on what, how much, or how long they read.

Adults may check the back of their scratcher card for a list of activities that track their progress. For example, adults may scratch off one mark for visiting the Library or borrowing materials, and three marks for watching a movie on Kanopy or attending a program. Special prizes will be awarded to different age groups upon completion.

Celebrating Pride

History Spotlight: An Early Gay Rights Victory in Mountain View










In commemoration of Pride Month, let’s look back at an early victory for gay rights in Mountain View.

The flourishing of the electronics industry and the closely related defense industry in Mountain View during the 1950s and 1960s meant that many civilian residents of the area needed federal security clearances, in addition to technical and academic credentials, to perform their jobs. This required individuals to pass background investigations which, among other things, probed their personal relationships and sexual orientation. Gay people were presumed to be susceptible to blackmail and were routinely denied security clearances and barred from federal employment.

In 1972, Allen L. Rock, an engineer at GTE Sylvania’s Mountain View facility, lost his security clearance because he was gay. For many, such a blow might have marked the end of their career as a defense contractor, but Rock, who had held a security clearance for several years, decided to fight back. With assistance from the American Civil Liberties Union, Rock successfully argued that, since he had been open about being gay for years, he was not susceptible to blackmail and, accordingly, the government had violated his rights by rescinding his clearance. 

Rock won reinstatement of his clearance after several years of legal wrangling. Meanwhile, he benefited from Mountain View’s relatively accepting corporate and professional culture, as he was able to maintain his employment and the support of his coworkers during the dispute, which drew national media attention. Despite Rock’s victory, official discrimination by the federal government against gay and lesbian people in granting security clearances continued. However, Rock was far from the last to fight for equality. In 1983, a group called High Tech Gays formed to advocate for gay rights for Santa Clara County’s many government contractors.
